“You’re lying. Besides, you gotta grab it again anyway, if we’re gonna dance like you want to so damn bad.”

I turned my body so I was facing him and rested a hand on his shoulder. “Ugh. This was a mistake.” With a smug look on his face, Trevor held out his right hand. I slapped my left one down in it. Unfortunately, the peace and serenity flooded back. So did the lust, and it was much more powerful this time.

The first song was fast, and our one-two-threes quickly turned into eight-five-tens, because Trevor had two left feet.

“What the heck is going on?” I asked as I stole the lead from him and tried to pull him until he was on beat. “I should fox trot you right back to that dinner table.”

He concentrated on his feet, which were stumbling over each other in his fancy shoes. “This is your fault, you dragged me out here.”

“I wanted to save us from all those questions, and I wanted to see you embarrass yourself. I didn’t know you were going to embarrass me this bad, too. All that money you made, and you never learned how to dance?”

“Why would I need to? It’s not like I was ever seriously dating anyone. It’s not like I was here with my mate.” I sensed a hint of...somethingin his voice.

“You sound bitter.”

“I’m not bitter,” he growled, a faint pattern of beautiful leopard spots showing on his skin.

“So you’re bitter.” That took me by surprise. “Did you want something different when we were in college?”

“Would have been nice if you weren’t so mean to me.”

“What is this, Kindergarten? You want me to treat you like the Headstart kids you’re supposed to be helping? I can give you some crayons so you can draw leopards, how about that?”

Trevor poked his bottom lip out, and I hated how cute it was. “See, that’s what I mean.” He had a point, and I wanted to do things differently now.

I sighed. “Sorry.”

He grinned. “Now, was that so hard?”

“Yes. Back to being mean.”

He laughed and squeezed me tighter. “No, stay nice. I like it when you’re nice.” I didn’t know how to respond to that, especially since it made me feel all giggly inside, so I said nothing and kept pulling my off-beat mate to the music.

The music slowed down.

I stopped dragging Trevor around, but I didn’t let go of his hand. “I’m not sure whether to be grateful or terrified.”

“Be grateful, Legs, you have an excuse to get close to me.”

“Tragic.” That’s what my mouth said, but when Trevor’s arm tightened around my waist, it was only natural to lean closer to him, to move forward until our bodies fitted against each other. I rested my head on his. It was nice. I tried to pass off my deep inhale as catching my breath after our dance, but really, I wanted to remember what he smelled like.

“You’re able to stay on beat when it’s slow like this,” I mumbled softly into his hair. It smelled nice, like expensive citrus cologne. “What gives? The slower music makes it so you can keep up?”

He ignored my teasing. “Y’know, it always bothered me.”

I was comfortable, so I replied with a simple, “Hmm?”

“That we’ve known about being fated for a long time, but never did anything about it.”

I tilted my head in confusion. “I thought you never cared about that.”

He scoffed. “Are you crazy? Why wouldn’t I care about that? Why wouldn’t I care about you?” Overwhelmed wasn’t the word. I thought he never cared about me a day in his life.

I pulled back to stare at him. “Then why’d you treat me the way you did?”

“Why’d you treat me the wayyoudid?” He fired back.

“So it’s my fault we’re not living some fairy-tale happily ever after?” Not that it was possible for us in the first place. Right?
