“You don’t want to? I can call a car to take you home.” He made a face like a kicked puppy.

“You sound like you want me to stick around.”

“Well, I mean, why not? Cuddling is nice. It’s nice for us to cuddle. We’re fated and all. Is that such a bad thing?”

“No, it’s good. I just never expected it.”

“You don’t have to be so suspicious anymore, Legs. I’m different now. You can trust me.”

“I’ll try. I would just need some time to get used to all of this.”

“You could if we saw each other more often.”

Now I was really flabbergasted. “I thought this would be a one-night stand.” Even with the claiming bite, I still didn’t really know where we stood.

He pointed at himself. “I never said that. You were thinking that?”

“I just assumed.”

“You know what they say about assuming.” I rolled my eyes, laughing softly. “So, is this the end of the line for us?” I wanted to test-drive building that trust by being honest with him, and myself.

I shook my head, my skin sliding against the silk pillowcase. “I don’t want it to be.”

“You want to see me again?”

“Don’t let your head get too big, otherwise I’ll put you in the Macy’s Day parade.” I reached back and playfully flicked my finger against his forehead.

He hugged me tight. “So, we’re seeing each other again.”

“Seems that way.”

“Good.” He played with my hand, moving the fingers around individually, turning it over to study the lines in my palm. “Why’d you agree to this, anyway?”

I looked toward the wall, wondering how many questions he had about the subject. “Money. You offered a lot of it.”

“You asked for a lot of it.”

“True.”

“Why? What do you need it for?” That got my back up a little. He was asking some very personal questions, poking at the sore spot.

“How do you know it isn’t just because I wanted a chunk of your fortune, hmm?”

“I know you. You don’t give a damn about money if you don’t want to do something. It’s one of the things I like about you. So, I figured you just needed it.”

“I do need it,” I admitted in a small voice, not sure how much more I wanted to reveal.

Trevor looked over my shoulder at me, still fidgeting with my hand but interlacing our fingers. His expression was so honest and open, so full of concern, that I was ready to crack right then and there.

“Wanna tell me what’s going on?’

“Emergency,” I choked out, pursing my lips tight together.

“Fine, you don’t have to tell me. Or you can tell me when you’re ready. Either way, okay?” I didn’t say anything, just nodded. My mate was being so caring. I wanted to tell him everything but it was so personal, and I just wasn’t sure how to be that vulnerable with him. He’s being so kind. He’s so different from who he was before, and so different from who I thought he was as a person. He’s my mate, and he feels like a fated mate. He claimed me.

After a while of cuddling and enjoying the comfort of being next to Trevor and full of him, his knot went down. I rolled over and angled my face into the skin of his chest, practically suffocating myself with the scent of his skin.I need to talk about this with someone. I can trust him.

I let it out in the tiniest whisper. “My mom has cancer.”
