“Good news or bad news? What’s that look about?”

“Trev, we need to talk.” He avoided eye contact and looked around the room nervously.

“Uh oh. I don’t like that tone.” I was scared of what he was gonna say. “What’s going on, Bye? Just spit it out. Are you breaking up with me?”

Byron looked at me like I’d grown a second head, then laughed. “Break up with you? I didn’t know we made anything official, even after all of this.” He spread his hands out to indicate Mom’s room, converted into a home-care unit, in the house I bought so she could be closer to a world-class hospital. Mom listened intently, but pretended to be a fly on the wall as Byron gave me this big talk of his.

“Should we be like teenagers and have the ‘what are we’ talk?” I quipped.

“I’ve been scared throughout so much of this, but you’ve shown me how you feel about me.” He gave me a soft kiss on the lips. “So, I’m not breaking up with you, it’s something different.”

I let out a huge sigh. “Okay. Now that I know we’re good, you can tell me anything and I’ll be happy.”

Byron was skeptical. “Anything?”

“Anything.”

“I’m pregnant.”

I brightened up, sitting up straight in my chair. “Really?”

“Really.”

That was what he scared me to death for? “That’s it?”

“That’s it?” He parroted. “What the hell do you mean, that’s it, Trevor? This isn’t a small matter, it’s a little person that’s in my womb that will be here in a few months that you put in there,” he pointed to his navel, “and they’re going to need love and care and diapers, so many diapers.”

I held my hands out in front of me. “Wait, wait, wait, Babe. I didn’t mean to make it sound like this isn’t a big deal. This is the biggest of deals. There is no bigger deal. I, a billionaire, have never done a bigger deal.”

Byron rolled his eyes, but fondly. “You are insufferable, do you know that?”

“I do, but you love me anyway.”

He wrapped his arms around my shoulders, hanging off me dramatically. “I do. I do love you, heaven have mercy on me.”

I experimented with resting a hand on his middle. “I love you so much more. If you ever wonder what we are, just know that you’re the love of my life, my fated mate, my life partner who I want by my side forever. Even more now that you’re giving me a child. We’re going to have a beautiful family and the best life that love can give us, and that money can buy.” I winked at him.

“Are you excited?”

“I’m so excited. I’m gonna teach my kid to make prank calls as soon as they can talk.”

“Please don’t.” Byron leaned forward to kiss me, a smile on his sweet, plump lips.

I looked over at the bed, where the “fly” was still sitting on the wall, taking it all in.

“Mom, I saw the look you were giving Bye earlier. You already knew?”

She smirked and sat back in bed, crossing her arms. “I’m a parent, I know everything about my son, before he even knows it himself. I was just waiting for him to tell me.” She was as smug as could be. “I can’t wait to watch the two of you raise this baby, and for me to spoil them rotten.”

I squeezed Byron’s elbows. “Guess you’re stuck with me, then?”

He waggled his head, as sassy as ever. “Get that outdated notion out of your head. I’m perfectly capable of raising a baby on my own, so if I wanted to get away from you, I’d leave tomorrow.”

A sly grin. “You don’t want to, though.”

His eyes went soft around the corners. “No, I don’t. I want to say right here with you. Never thought I’d see the day I’d admit that, but deep down inside, I’ve always wanted it.”

“This is the best day ever. Mom’s got a clean bill of health, I’ve got a cool gig helping our community, and you’ve got a bun in the oven. We’re already a family, and I think we have been for longer than we realized, but you know what? I’m ready to build it bigger with some little ones running around. I’m ready to do it with you.”
