I kicked myself as I went back into the conference room.

“Bad news?” Stefan asked as I dragged back in. “You look like all your workers unionized or something.” Brennan gave him a look. “What? I was only kidding.”

“I just got myself up shit creek without a paddle.”

“How so?” asked Victor.

“I just agreed to bring a date to a charity gala.”

The whole table let out a long, “ooooooohhhhh,” all at once.

“You fuckers aren’t helping.” I dropped back down into my chair, ducked my head, and covered it with my hands. “How exactly can I find a date on this short of notice?” I wished like hell it was possible to take Byron with me, to go out places with him for real.

“Escort service?” Richie suggested, “There are plenty of omegas who know how to charm at high society functions, and we all know you’re not exactly unfamiliar with sex workers.”

“You’d be right about that.” I grinned and crossed my arms in my lap, winking.

Brennan rolled his eyes. “The escort wouldn’t be the problem, Trev would. He’d blow his own cover.”

“C’mon, Bro.”

He shrugged. “You would.”

I sighed. “Hate it when you’re right.” What would Byron think if he saw me out with an escort? He’d think, “typical,” and keep right on hating me. I didn’t want him to see me out with anyone at all, truth be told.

Vic weighed in. “I think you’d better find somebody who at least knows at least a few facts about you. Guess you have to break that little black book right back out again. I don’t even think they need to know much, you just need a bit of shared history. Do you have anybody, anybody at all, that you’ve dated for more than five minutes?”

Everybody around the table stared at me.

I scratched my head. “More than five minutes? Gotta be honest with you, man, I think three might be the record.” Brennan threw up his hands, rolling his eyes toward the ceiling. “Don’t act like I’m the only one who’s relationship-challenged among us. Better than marrying some trophy omega just to say I did it and have some pretty idiot in my bed every night.”

“Yeah, pat yourself on the back for that.”

“Guys, this is serious. I really need your help. Don’t you know anybody?”

“Too bad your fated mate can’t suddenly fall from the sky,” Rich said. If he only knew. The feel of Byron’s slim bicep in my hand haunted my thoughts. Looking up at him, so tall and regal, made me want to get on my knees and bow to him even lower.

Brennan pressed me. “Don’t you know anybody? There’s gotta be someone, some suitable omega who knows enough about you to pull off being your date. They can pretend to like you for one whole night. As a matter of fact, you may never find an omega who likes you, so how about somebody who hates you? It’d be convincing as hell. People would think you were really together.”

A light bulb switched on over my head. “That’s it.”

“What’s it?”

“You’re a genius. I know just the omega.”

My mate.

Byron would be perfect. New hope filled my body at the idea of going on an actual date with my fated mate. He knew enough about me to hate me, and that just might be my best bet. That is, if he agreed to go with me and didn’t kill me before the night was over, and it was a strong possibility. There was only one way to find out.
