A shot rang out.

Shelby froze.

The men lay still, the struggle over.

Shelby ran toward them. “Remy? Oh, dear God. Remy!”

“Help me,” he said from beneath the other man.

Her heart in her throat, Shelby dropped the gun, grabbed one arm of the man in black and tugged as hard as she could, dragging him over until he rolled onto his back.

Remy lay on his back, blood staining his naked chest.

“You’re hurt!” Shelby dropped to her knees and felt around his chest for the wound, tears filling her eyes, blurring her vision. “Geezus! Where’s the damned wound?”

He caught her hand in his. “Shelby, sweetheart. It’s not my blood.”

She leaned back and blinked away the tears. “You’re not hurt?”

He sat up. “No.”

Shelby flung herself into his arms. “I almost lost you. Damn you. I almost lost you.”

“But you didn’t. And the best part is that you’re okay. I thought he’d kill you before I had a chance to tell you...”

“When I heard that shot…I thought…I thought you were dead.” She stared up into his eyes.

He smoothed her hair back from her damp face.

She shook her head. “I was afraid you were dead, and I didn’t get the chance to tell you…”

“I love you,” he said.

“Yes. That.” She smiled. “I love you. I always have.”

“No,” he said. “That’s not what I meant.”

She frowned. Confused. “But I do. I love you.”

He chuckled. “Listen to what I said.”

Shelby’s frown deepened. “I’m listening.”

Remy pointed to himself. “I. Love. You.” He pointed to her.

As understanding dawned, Shelby’s heart exploded with emotion. Still, she hesitated.

“Seriously?” She shook her head. “Isn’t it too soon? I mean, I’ve known all my life that I loved you.”

He kissed her lips gently. “And I’ve known for exactly three weeks, five days and twelve hours. I have a lot of time to make up.”

“You can start now.”

Remy laughed and pulled her into his arms. “I love you, Deputy Taylor."

Shelby wrapped her arms around the man she loved with all her heart and held on tight.
