Alaina Sullivan wasn’t for him. And he would do well to remember that.

ITWASHERwedding day. That she couldn’t quite...come to terms with. She put on the white lace gown and looked in the mirror, then started to try and arrange her hair.

There were definite benefits to curly hair. She could get a tumbled effect with an updo without having to engage in much precision. If she wanted something sleek, she was out of luck, but tumbled... That was easy.

Slowly, she started to put makeup on. Trying to imagine how the day would unfold. They would say their vows.

They would... They were going to have to kiss.

Which they hadn’t discussed at all.

She had a feeling that Gus just wasn’t worried about it. That it didn’t bother him. That it had never even occurred to him to worry at all. He would just grab her and kiss her and not feel a thing.

Maybe the pastor would tell them to kiss and Gus wouldlaugh.

She felt miserable.

She went downstairs looking miserable.

Her sisters were down there, all dressed up in mismatching dresses—her bridesmaids, even if they weren’t in formal wear.

They shrieked when they saw her.

“You look beautiful,” Rory said, her eyes shining with romance that was not merited.

“My baby is all grown up,” Fia added.

“I still can’t believe you’re marrying him,” Quinn said, looking sharp.

“Hey,” she said. “Can you stop with that?”

“Everything’s going to be fine. But if you need to leave him, you can always come back home,” Fia said.

“Well, thank you for helping me plan my divorce before I even walk down the aisle.”

“It’s always good to know that you have an escape route,” Fia said nodding. “I don’t forget that I have a 30-06. I can handle Gus McCloud.”

“Settle down,” she said. “Honestly.”

The flowers that she would carry to walk down the aisle were from the garden. Her sisters’ garden, which she hadn’t been as enthusiastic about as she should have been.

She suddenly felt wistful and sad leaving their crazy mismatched house with all of its brightly colored paint. She’d been so focused on the fact that it wasn’t hers, that she hadn’t really realized how much she would miss it.

Maybe she’d done them all a disservice by not asking for what she’d wanted.

She suddenly felt very young. And a little bit tragic.

She’d been behaving poorly; that was the bottom line. She hadn’t been open with her sisters. She’d thought hooking up with Travis was maturity when it just...wasn’t. She’d needed Gus to step in when she was absolutely panicking...

And she’d never talked to her sisters about what she’d wanted, or what she wished was going on and...

Maybe it had all been a mistake.

Should she have leaned on them instead of him?

But you didn’t. You said you’d marry Gus, and here you are. This is where your choices took you and you have to follow through.

“I love you guys,” she said, wrapping her arms around them and standing out in the yard for a long moment. “I can’t believe I’m leaving.”
