“You don’t know what Colby or Windsong are capable of. And if you mean to make a direct assault on Mystic River, I think you’ll find you’ve bitten off more than you can chew. We might have our inner squabbles, but if and when someone tries to attack our sovereignty, we’ll join forces to combat it.”

“What is it you think I tried to do to you? You cannot deny the way your body responded to mine. You should have seen her Hamish; she was like Queen Scathach of Skye. I believe our men could learn a thing or two from her.” Sean turned back to her, “But I warn you, Winter, your warrior days are over. You will sit at my side as first lady of the clan and leave the fighting to those of us better capable.”

“You don’t think me capable? As I recall, you were the one whose ass hit the ground first.”

“Aye, and at some point I might decide to make you pay for that bit of mischief.”

“Go away, Campbell. There’s nothing for you here. Colby will never surrender one of those to whom he has given sanctuary.”

“And what did you and the others give to him for that? It’s said that he has a veritable harem up at Winds…”

Before he could complete the sentence, Winter balled her fist and punched him in the mouth, snapping his head back and loosening his grip on her ankle. She kicked at him again, knocking him away as she rolled off the bed. Her progress was halted when he used his body to slam her into the floor before picking her up, tossing her face down on the bed, and landing five harsh strikes to her backside.

No one had ever spanked her in her entire life. It hurt, but behind the pain bloomed a warmth that threatened to reignite every erotic synapse in her system.

“You do that again, mate, and I’ll make sure you don’t sit comfortably for a week. You’re in bad need of taming. I’d rather gentle you to my hand, but if you continue to be as stubborn and fractious as you’ve proved yourself to be so far, I’ll take my razor strap to you.”

“What makes you think I won’t just shift and tear your throat out?” she challenged.

“Because it won’t work, and you know it. If you could get some distance between us before you shifted, you might be able to go out the same way you came in, but I’d be on you before you made it out of the yard. Then you’d be left naked and far more vulnerable to my prowess as your mate.”

She searched his face. There was no lack of truth or belief there. He was correct; he had her dead to rights, and she couldn’t get away from him—not yet.

“How the hell did you end up here?” he asked. “Who helped you escape Curaidh?”

Winter forced herself to relax her body. “You don’t really expect me to answer that, do you?”

“Not really, but it was worth a try. Hamish,” he said, his voice sounding wearied, “go on back to bed. I’ll secure my mate. Grab the cable ties out of my bag.” Hamish did so and Sean managed to get her wrists secured, despite her struggles. “We’ll get some sleep and deal with the rest of it in the morning.”

“Trudy will never help you,” Winter said, hoping that perhaps Trudy had heard them fighting, but if she had, she would have confronted Sean and Hamish. The best she could hope for was that in the morning, Trudy would realize what happened and get word to Colby.

“I never expected her to.”

“Alpha, I don’t think we should discount Reynolds. I think maybe we’d be better off to get back to the plane.”

“That’s it,” Winter said in a derisive tone. “Run back to the Highlands with your tails between your legs.”

“That’ll never happen,” said Sean. “Hamish, let’s just get some sleep before we have to deal with whatever shit Reynolds decides to throw at us.”

Campbell had no idea the amount of pressure Colby could and would bring to bear in order to secure her freedom. On more than one occasion, the two had talked about it, and Colby had assured her that he would stand at her side and fight the devil himself to keep her free. She only hoped that her faith in Colby was justified.

“Untie me,” she said, holding her hands out to Campbell.

“No. Hamish, go on to bed, we’ll deal with this in the morning.”

His beta left the room, closing and locking the door behind him as best he could.

“I’ll behave.”

Campbell snorted. “I don’t believe that any more than you do. Nay, mate, you’ll sleep beside me, and we’ll figure out the best way to extricate you from this mess you’ve made in the morning.”

“You can’t just expect me to sleep next to you in the same bed.”

“Why not? We are, after all, bonded and married in the eyes of our people.”

“I was forced into that, and as you’ll recall, I never took my vows.”

Campbell chuckled. “I don’t want to upset you, but many is the first lady of our clan that refused to take her vows, only to emerge from seclusion purring an entirely different tune. You’ll be no different.”
