While the new lock makes me feel a little bit safer staying alone in the town house, I’m still on edge.

Knowing the thief has my address is only part of the reason.

The other is that Lyla has texted and called repeatedly on my cell phone in the past few hours as if she knows I have it back.

I’m afraid that if I talk to her, I’ll tell her everything. She’s my best friend. I don’t have anyone to tell, but I can’t say a word.

On the fourth call, I cave and pick up while hiding out in my locked bedroom as if the two doors between me and the world could keep me safe from what’s bothering me tonight.

“Hi, Lyla.”

“Finally!” she exclaims. “You’re home?”

“Yes,” I say as I sit down on the foot of the bed.

“My dad said you got your car back and phone.”

“He got my car and phone back. Somehow.”

“I’m not surprised. He’s ruthless when he decides to do something. A man preying on young girls is exactly the type of person he would enjoy taking down.”

“Right,” I say.

“Are you okay, though? You sound…different. Sad.”

“I’m fine,” I assure her. And since she’s not going to let it go until I tell her the truth, I add, “I don’t know if Isaac caught the guy who robbed me. And he still knows where I live…”

“Jesus, Holly! You should’ve met him at a restaurant or something on the first date.”

“I know. Too late now. How was I supposed to know he was a criminal?”

Lyla sighs and says, “I’m sorry. Maybe…maybe I could talk to my dad and see if he can send someone over tonight.”

“No, you don’t have to do that.”

“You’re freaking out. I can hear it in your voice, even though you’re trying to act like you’re fine.”

“I’m gonna try to find a roommate.”

“Good. If you wait a few weeks, I could come live with you.”

“No, Lyla!” Remembering the bet I made with Isaac if he was able to get my car back, I have to convince her not to drop out. And knowing that’s what’s best for her, I add, “Stay at school. You’re so close to finishing. I don’t want you to leave and regret never getting your degree after all that hard work.”

“We’ll see,” she says, which means she’s probably already made up her mind.

“Your dad will be furious if you come home.”

Snorting, she says, “Why do you think I haven’t already?”

“Of course.”

“Well, I’ll let you get some rest, but at least let me give you my dad’s number in case you have any unexpected visitors.”

“Are you sure he won’t mind?” I ask, even though I would love to have a way to contact him.

“He won’t mind. I’ll give him a heads-up after we hang up.”

“Okay, thanks.”
