“If he’s single and you’re single, I don’t see the problem.”

“He’s older, much older.”

“So? Celebrities date people thirty or forty years younger or older all the time, right?”

“I guess, but…”

“I think you should go for it.”

“Really?”

“Yes. I’m so sure that I’m buying this outfit for you.”

“What? No. You can’t do that.”

“Were you serious about the extra room?”

“Yes.”

Holding her hand out, she says, “I’m Brooke Morgan. I’ll give you my half of this month’s rent and next month’s today.”

Shaking her hand briefly, I tell her, “I’m Holly Garrison, and you don’t even know how much my rent is yet.”

“If you live nearby in a two-bedroom apartment…”

“Town house.”

“Then I’m guessing it’s around eight hundred a month? Nine?”

“Eight fifty,” I confirm.

“Easy. I was paying the entire rent for my ex’s apartment. Half will be a relief.”

“Don’t you want to see it first? Make sure you like the room, the neighborhood, that it’s not a pigsty.”

“Holly, I’m desperate. If you’ll agree to a two-month trial, then I would be grateful. If it doesn’t work out, if we hate each other in a week, then I’ll find someplace else to live as soon as possible. Would that work for you?”

“That sounds…great.”

“Can I move in this afternoon when I get off work?”

“Of course.”

I stand there, a little bewildered, as this girl pulls out her purse and starts counting out eight hundred and fifty dollars in twenty-dollar bills. Then I scribble down my address on the back of a receipt paper.

“Let me get you a bag for your outfit.”

“I can pay for it now,” I tell her with a smile as I lift the stack of bills.

“No way. You’re a godsend. And don’t worry, I will stay out of your way tonight if you want to call your man over. You won’t hear a peep out of me from my room as I eat a gallon of ice cream and watch rom-coms with my headphones on.”

“You really think I should go for it with the biker? What if he walks away again?”

“Again? Give me all the details,” she says.

So I do.

Ten minutes later, Brooke is nodding her head before I finish talking. “You have him right where you want him. Call him. No, send him a photo of you wearing this, and he won’t be able to resist. Even better, send a video!”
