“Yes,” she replies without moving, her knees still under her.

And since I don’t know what the hell to say, since there are no words for what we did, what she gave me, I tell her, “I’m gonna get a shower. Clean up and get ready for bed.”

“Okay,” she agrees before I head for the bathroom.

I’m still wide-awake in the dark bedroom when Isaac comes out of the bathroom and climbs into bed. I freeze as I wait to see what he’ll do. I’m not all that surprised when he doesn’t reach for me. Of course he’s not a cuddler. I hated it, but I didn’t expect anything else after the sex.

A kind of sex I’ve never been brave enough to try before. But for Isaac, it took no convincing on his part to have me begging for it.

It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I would’ve preferred for him to fill me somewhere else. Still, I’ll take whatever I can get from him.

When he’s settled down on his back, an arm over his face, he says, “Tonight’s the last night. I will find that bastard tomorrow.”

“If you say so,” I murmur, hating how wretched those words make me feel inside.

“I do.”

“Good,” I reply with a heavy sigh.

“Lyla can’t ever find out…” He trails off.

“I know.”

He doesn’t say anything for a long while as we both lie there in the silence, breathing near each other but not touching. “Do you regret it?” he asks softly.

“No,” I answer honestly. “Do you?” I hold my breath as I wait for him to respond.

“No. I should, but I don’t. I’m just too old for this shit.”

I get that the age difference between us bothers him; I just don’t know why. “What’s the difference between having sex with me or someone your age?” I ask him.

He’s silent for so long I nearly drift off to fall asleep. Finally, he says, “It’s never felt like this.”

“Is that a good thing or…”

“It’s fucked-up, that’s what it is,” he grumbles. “It’s fucked-up how good it is.”

I smile proudly in the dark at that statement. “The forbidden fruit. Knowing you shouldn’t do something makes it better.”

“Right,” he says. “That’s all this is.”

“Sure,” I lie to him before I close my eyes tight to stop any tears from escaping.

CHAPTERTHIRTEEN

Isaac

I’m still asleep in Holly’s bed when my phone begins buzzing early the next morning. When I don’t answer, a brief text appears on the screen from my bruiser, Hank.

Found that guy, then a follow-up text saying,I’m out back.

I roll over and rub my bristly, unshaven cheek across Holly’s much smoother face, down to her neck. “I have to get moving, beautiful. Got an early day at work,” I whisper to her as she awakens.

“Already?” she protests with a stretch. “What time is it? The alarm goes off at six fifteen.”
