So, the conception could’ve been when we were still together. But all those weeks of dating, we never had sex, not even once.

I stare at her face, willing her sad eyes to lift to mine, to answer my unspoken question. Was she pregnant then and didn’t tell me, or did she move on with someone else that fast?

When she pretends like I’m not there, that I don’t even exist, I want to yell at her to fucking look at me, tell me.

“I love your house. Give me the full tour?” she says to Lyla, and then they’re gone, disappearing down the hall.

“I’ve…I gotta go,” I mutter to Fulton. He says something that I don’t catch on my way to my bike. All I know is I have to get out of here before I fuck up Holly and Lyla’s friendship. She would never forgive me, neither of them. And Holly’s forgiveness is something I may need if there’s any chance of letting me back in her life.

CHAPTERTHIRTY-SIX

Holly

“Where’s my dad? Did he leave already?” Lyla asks when we return to the living room.

I let out the breath I’ve been holding all this time. All I could do was smile and nod as Lyla showed me around. But I couldn’t see or hear anything she said. Not over the thoughts racing through my head.

If I had known Isaac would be here…

God, it was agonizing to see his bike, to see him, even if it was only from the corner of my eye. I knew that if I looked at him, if I saw the fear on his face, I would fall apart. And I can’t do that in front of Lyla.

“Yeah. Sorry. I tried to get him to stay,” Barrett says to her.

“It’s fine,” Lyla murmurs.

“It’s not fine, Lyla. You need to talk to him. Convince him to change his mind.”

“C-change his mind about what?” I blurt out.

“MC bullshit,” Lyla says. “The Savage Kings are forcing the Devil Hounds to either disappear or patch over, become members of the Savage Kings. My father is being stubborn and taking the bloody way.”

“Bloody? Like there might be actual fighting? Shootings again, like this fall?”

“Hopefully, it won’t come to that,” she mutters. “I’ll try to talk him into backing down, but I don’t know if he’ll listen.”

“Why doesn’t he want to patch over?”

“He wouldn’t be president,” she says simply. “He wouldn’t give the orders but have to take them from guys younger than him. I can’t see him giving up the Devil Hounds patch. He’s been a member for as long as I can remember, along with most of the other men in Clayton.”

“He’s lucky as shit if you ask me,” Barrett says. “They could’ve crushed the Hounds for kidnapping our prospect. Instead, they’re offering them a chance to level up.”

“I’ll go talk to him tomorrow,” Lyla says. “But if I had to bet, they’ll have to pry the Devil Hounds patches off his cold, dead body.”

Hearing that…Isaac wouldn’t do something so stupid, would he?

If anything happened to him…

While we may not have a future together, I still want him to have one himself.

And if he hadn’t pushed me away months ago, maybe I could’ve tried to persuade him, and nobody would have to get hurt.

But if that man is too stubborn to see for himself how badly this could end for him and his men, how dangerous it is for not just them but the whole town, well, then I’ll know I made the right decision by not being a part of his life. And not letting him be a part of the baby’s life either.
