“I do. It allows me to gather intel about…”

Shit, divert it quickly!

“About how to be a better guard. You see, I’m hoping to move to another continent at some point, and take up a job at whatever kingdom I end up at.”

“I see,” nods Ellie. “So you don’t care too much for Ihokha and Fohri then?”

“I’ll be honest with you for a moment,” I say. I lean forward and bring my tone down to a whisper. “I honestly couldn’t care any less about either of them, especially Fohri.”

She suddenly bursts into laughter with a mouthful of food. The sound of it is like music to my ears. Embarrassed, she immediately covers her mouth.

“I’m sorry,” she chuckles.

“You’re okay,” I laugh.

“You know something Brilyk, I’ve met some real assholes over the past few days but you’re not one of them.”

She and I spend the night talking to each other. For the first time ever since I stepped foot onto the Renziu grounds, I forget all about the rebellion, my mind instead becoming solely occupied by Ellie and all the amazing things about her.

IHOKHA

Thank the gods I was keeping an eye on my brother Fohri. A voice in my head told me something might have happened today, so I’d been keeping myself at a distance during his time with Ellie. It’s a shame about that zagfer he has put into medical care.

The worst part was catching him in the act, when he was about to do unspeakable things to Ellie. Had I not intervened, things would have taken a turn for the worse. Though I swore that I saw Brilyk take a step forward right before I did.

The sight was most peculiar indeed. As Fohri’s most trusted guard, I have always viewed Brilyk as nothing more than a glorified errand boy.

Just what exactly was he going to do?I wonder to myself. Was he going to intervene too? Sticking by Ellie’s side is one thing, but for him to come to her protection is another matter altogether. I must remember to keep an observant eye on him.

Regardless, it’s a good thing I pulled Fohri away. There’s concerning troubles looming ahead for the both of us, and as much as I hate to admit it, I need my brother to help sort things out. I open the entrance to the manor and turn to him, gesturing for him to enter first.

“Come on then,” I say. “We will discuss these matters in my office, away from prying eyes and curious ears.”

“Very well then, let’s make this quick.”

I lead him through the hallways and corridors, zagfer and miou bowing and saluting as we walk by. If things do not go our way in the very near future, it is a sight that we won’t behold for much longer.

The gods know just how much forced respect feeds my brother’s ego. We reach my office. Again, I open the door and look around for suspicious persons before following him in.

“So then, what is it?” asks Fohri.

“There’s majorly concerning news coming from the far sides of our territory. I’ve received several reports of growing rebellion efforts in the outskirts of Infnore.”

“To what extent?”

“Small riots in the villages. On top of that, they’re ravaging military supply carts coming in from elsewhere, all in the name of getting us out of the land.”

Fohri grunts and turns towards the window, stroking his chin in deep thought. “This is not good,” he mutters.

“If this continues, the rebel movement will be better equipped, and if they succeed in cutting off our supply routes entirely, we’ll be boxed in with nowhere to go.”

“Something must be done to put an end to this,” he says, spinning around to face me.

“We must show a firm hand in the face of this danger, brother.”

“You’re right,” he replies, a sick smile etching its way across his face. “I say we clamp our feet down and gather these protestors into a cage. Then, we can have them tortured and executed in the public eye in order to teach Infnore a lesson.”
