Attacks come with a chance of innocent blood being spilled, and I do not wish for Ellie’s to be amongst it. I watch her as she runs ahead, frolicking between the bushes and flowers.

There has to be something I can do to keep her safe…

I think then of the secret routes I created underneath the manor, the ones I’ve been using to sneak away for years.

I could escort her out of here through those tunnels before the attack commences!

Satisfied with my plan, a smile spreads across my face.

It’s perfect. People like Ihokha will think that she died in the battle.

Up ahead, Ellie smiles as an apis lands on her fingers, bouncing around for a moment before turning its attention to the flowers. I think of her old life, from when she wasn’t under the chains of the Renzius.

Best of all, she will be a free woman again, just as she deserves to be. With the mission accomplished, Infnore will be liberated, Fohri will be a rotting corpse, and Ihokha will be ousted.

I walk forth to join her, already envisioning the life of peace we’ll live together when all is said and done. Under my care, she’ll forever be out of harm’s way. I stop by her side as she bends over, admiring the petals of the flowers.

She looks up at me with a smile so radiant that it shines brighter than the sun. I offer her my hand which she graciously accepts. Her and I then continue walking through the maze of the gardens.

“You seem happiest when you’re out here,” I remark.

“That’s because this is the only place I feel at home in. It reminds me a lot of my old life.”

“Tell me more about that. You mentioned how you used to work on another estate?”

“That’s right, for another dark elf by the name of Vetrin Anocne. I was the main groundskeeper there.”

“Self-taught?”

“Oh no, I wouldn’t be as good as I am with gardens if it wasn’t for an old teacher of mine,” she says, breathing a sigh of contemplation. “Her name was Agatha. Best friend that I ever had.”

“Was? Has she…”

“Yeah,” says Ellie with a hint of sadness. “She passed away a few years ago.”

“Well it seems as though she imparted plenty of knowledge to you. Not even the gardeners here handle the plants with such care as you do.”

“Oh come on, don’t tease me,” she laughs. “They do just fine here. Although they could do with a lesson or two…”

“That’s what I thought,” I reply.

She stops and looks around, a look of longing in her eyes. “You know, I just wish that if I had to come here that it was under different circumstances. Why couldn’t Fohri have looked at my gardening skills and offered me a job as a groundskeeper here? Maybe things wouldn’t be so bad then.”

“I’m afraid the last thing Fohri appreciates is a nice garden to lay in.”

“You’re right,” she sighs. “The only thing he wishes to lay in is between my legs. That’s never going to happen.”

“What was it like to work for Mr. Anocne?” I ask.

“It was fine. I actually got to enjoy myself quite a bit at his residence. I did my work well and without mistakes, so it afforded me a lot of leeway in terms of liberty. It was a lot of strenuous work at times but it’s what I enjoyed doing.”

“A lot of liberty you say? Tell me Ellie, if you were to be a free woman again, what would you do?”

“First thing would be to get the fuck out of here,” she chuckles. “Far far away. Maybe I’d go back to work for Mr. Anocne, but I don’t know.”

As she speaks, I make mental notes of what she wants so that I can give it to her in the near future when I get her out of here.

“There’s not really much point in talking about being free,” sighs Ellie. “It’ll only make me miss it more. Chances are I’m never going to have it again.”
