“Please, let us all sit and I’ll tell you everything,” I say.

We take our seats surrounding the fire, huddling close.

“What do you have for us?” asks Arvak.

“Gentlemen, there has been a major turn of events at the estate. Fohri had decided to venture on a royal tour, journeying to each and every village in Infnore’s outskirts.”

“Fohri? Out on tour? An interesting development indeed…” mutters Gavarn.

“Aye. He’ll be traveling along the old country roads, and for that reason I believe now is the opportune time to strike and take him out for good. He’ll have guards with him for certain but nowhere near the level of security he’d have at the manor.”

“Good call,” says Gavarn. “All in favor of moving forward with Fohri’s assassination?”

The others nod in agreement.

“Very well then. We’ll put together a plan later tonight. For now, we must discuss the attack on the manor to follow Fohri’s assassination.”

He turns his focus to the other leaders. “You guys get a head start. I must talk to Brilyk in private.” Confused, I follow him into another room. “There has been a sudden decrease in your intel reports. What’s going on?” he asks.

Trusting Gavarn with my life, I make no hesitation telling him the truth.“A few weeks ago, Fohri kidnapped a human woman by the name of Ellie and brought her back to the manor. I’ve been assigned to watch over her permanently, so I haven’t been able to get close to Fohri for a while.”

“I see… Well, soon enough we won't have to worry about this human getting in the way of our plans.”

“Yeah, about that…”

“Hmm?”

“There’s not much time to get into it but I must admit that I have fallen in love with the woman.”

“What?” replies a wide-eyed Gavarn.

“It’s true,” I say firmly. “And because of that, I do not wish for her to get dragged into the middle of this when the attack commences.”

“Brilyk,” sighs Gavarn. “I hope this isn’t the real reason behind your lack of intel.”

“It isn’t,” I tell him insistently. “It’s true that I’m her personal guard, so I can’t get close to Fohri’s documents if I wanted to.”

“I see,” he replies, stroking his chin in deep thought. “Well then, in that case, I suppose we’ll have to get her out of there.”

“That’s part of the plan. I already have a few routes to choose from.”

“Okay,” he says. “Just make sure she’s out of there as soon as possible. Things are about to go down.”

“Will do,” I reply as I look out the window. “I need to get going. Give my farewell to the others for me, and I’ll see you soon with a sword in my hand.”

We embrace before I hop out of the window. As I run through the woods, the thoughts of Ellie and Ihokha being alone together come back into my mind. While it saddens me, I find solace in the fact that some good has come out of tonight’s meeting.

Soon, Fohri will be dealt with for good. As for his brother, well… If he lays a hand on Ellie, I will not exercise patience in getting rid of that loose end.

I slow down as I approach the manor. This time, I opt for a better route, one that will take me directly to my quarters in the servant hall. I’m about to embark through a different passage when Ellie springs into my mind again.

Perhaps I should go and check on her…

It comes with a risk for there’s bound to be guards roaming the halls. Still, I cannot rest easily until I know that she’s safe. I enter the manor grounds through an alternate route, one that takes me as close as possible to her room.

It takes me a few minutes to sneak through undetected. Ihokha has clearly deployed extra sentries in the case of an attack. My years of training allow me to slip by without issue.

I come to the stairwell leading to Ellie’s quarters. As I climb up it, I suddenly notice the leaves and stray branches hanging off of my armor set.
