His brother, Ihokha, doesn’t concern me as much. In my mind, he’s nothing more than a useless noble. Regardless, I can’t help but think there’s more he could be doing to stop the chaos caused by Fohri.

In my dedication to the rebellion, I posed as a miou for many years, eventually infiltrating the estate of the Renziu brothers. Here, I worked hard to climb up the ranks and managed to cement myself among the most trusted guards of Fohri.

The old saying goes… Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

My position amongst the elite guard has come in extremely beneficial for the rebellion. Often I find myself to be one of the first informed of a new strategy or guard deployment in Infnore.

Relaying such important information to Gavarn has allowed the rebellion to carefully coordinate their movements and create counter plans to sabotage Fohri. We have yet to make any significant gains, but with my undercover placement by the enemy’s side, victory is almost guaranteed to come to us.

I smile at the thought of finally overthrowing the Renziu bastard, picturing his head on a pike on the top of the estate. However, my moment of bliss doesn’t last long, for there rings through the halls an echo of a blood curdling scream. Some of the guards look around uneasily, with one even unsheathing their sword when the scream comes again.

“Stand down,” I order. “It could just be Fohri bringing in a new toy for himself.”

I look to the end of the hallway. From around the corner, there emerges a set of guards. In their hands they hold a human woman, dragging her along the ground.

“No!” she yells.

So that’s where the screaming is coming from, but what is a human woman doing here? This could be interesting…

I command the other guards to stay put in their post as I move forward, keen on finding out more information on the human. Suddenly, Fohri appears behind her, the sight of whom catches me off guard. The arrivals work in my direction, allowing me to get a look at the woman as guards drag her by me.

By the gods…I think as I check her out. She’s beautiful…

Despite her thrashing around, I cannot help but take note of the woman’s striking features. Long black hair falls down over the sides of her face, complemented by dark eyebrows. For one split moment, she opens her eyes, allowing me to catch sight of a set of eyes blue like the ocean.

She passes me by without noticing me, and so I turn my attention back to Fohri. He accosts me with a cocky smile. “What are you doing back at the estate so soon, my lord?” I ask, bowing to him. “We weren’t expecting you back until the early hours of tomorrow morning.”

“Unfortunately, I had to leave earlier than expected in order to shut the mouth of my endlessly complaining brother,” he explains.

So Ihokha is back too…

“But you know me, Brilyk, I don’t leave anywhere without a little souvenir,” he says, gesturing to the woman who now disappears up a flight of stairs.

How does she fit into all of this?I think to myself.Something must have happened during their trip…

“Anyway, I’ll be off,” says Fohri, taking off in a brisk walk down the hallway.

I return to my original post, wondering just what the fuck is going on. Being one of Fohri’s most trusted guards, I’ve been witness to many awful acts of cruelty at his hands, oftentimes finding myself having to comfort his victims and ensure then better days are coming.

Some of those acts would turn the stomachs of even the most battle ready men, but this was something else entirely. Seeing a human woman being dragged against her will to partake in Fohri’s sick fantasies brewed inside me a strange feeling.

I can’t help but feel pity for the woman. It’s clear to me that she had no choice in the matter, not that any one of Fohri’s victims did in the first place. It only reminds me of the fact that something must be done to bring the leader’s reign of tyranny to an end, whether by death or imprisonment.

Maybe I won’t have to do anything in the end at all,I wonder.

A development of this sort is certain to attract the attention of the overruling council in Kantor. They’re the only ones capable of interfering in Renzir business.

Perhaps this’ll finally be the reason to push them to step in and do something about Fohri… Then again, how can I trust they’ll lift a finger?

I become annoyed at the memory of them letting Fohri keep his title after letting the famine deplete the population. I order the other guards to remain at their posts. I walk off and head for one of the training rooms.

There, I spend some time cooling off by practicing my swing. Whenever I look at the target dummies, I picture the head of Fohri atop them. That alone is enough motivation to keep me going when I run out of breath. When I finally have enough, I take a seat and think about my next move.

“There stands a chance the council will simply let this slide,” I say to myself. “But it doesn’t matter. I must bring word of this new development back to Gavarn, he is sure to make good use of it. Then we’ll be one step closer to bringing the Renziu reign crumbling down to shambles.”

I rise to my feet and sheathe my sword. Wiping the sweat from my forehead, I get ready to return to my post as I continue planning.

“Before I can make a move, I must ensure Fohri is distracted with the human woman. I can’t afford to be seen leaving.”
