“Please forget I said that,” I plead. “It was stupid.”

“It’s not stupid.”

“It is!” I cry. “I’m twenty-nine years old and asking a stranger to teach me about life. That’s pretty stupid.”

Dip leans forward, bracing his arms on either side of my head. I breathe in the scent of leather and oil, and my head spins from the intoxicating combination. I’m so far out of my league with this man, but that doesn’t stop me from wanting to learn from him.

I left Rhode Island wanting a new life, and this is it.

What if you find exactly what you never knew you wanted?

Jenny’s words return to my mind, a stark reminder that I had a plan when I raced out of Barlow’s. I had one thought on my mind, one goal, and that was to get this man to agree to teach me his ways.

His very sinful ways.

“I’m waiting,” he prods.

I sigh. “Jenny said you came back here, looking for me.”

“I did.”

“Why?”

Dip straightens, dropping his arms to his side. “Because I saw you the other night and something…”

“Something what?”

Like the curtain at intermission at the opera, a wall slides into place over his expression. “You explain what you meant, and then I’ll answer that question,” he says.

“I don’t know how to explain it,” I hedge.

“Try.”

I’m not sure how I feel about another man bossing me around, but it doesn’t grate on me quite like it did when Michael issued demands, so I let it pass.

“I’m a widow,” I begin, and his eyes widen. “Married at nineteen and widowed ten years later.” He opens his mouth to speak, but I hold up a hand to silence him, knowing that if I don’t spit this out, I never will. And also not wanting to get into the nitty-gritty details of my marriage just yet. “I’ve never really…” I swallow and try to gather my thoughts. “I was young, ya know? There are so many things that I’ve never experienced, and I want to. Ireallywant to.”

“Things like what?” he asks.

Like great sex and getting drunk and riding a motorcycle and…

So many things.

“I don’t know,” I lie.

“Bullshit.”

“What?”

“Bullshit,” he repeats. “You know what you want to experience, so tell me.”

“I…”

I lower my chin, but Dip lifts it gently with his finger, forcing me to look him in the eyes. “I’ve already told you not to hide from me.”

“I know.”

“Then why do you keep doing it?”
