Grace, Duck’s ol’ lady, glares at my VP. “Please explain how fantasies are club business.”

Duck cracks like an egg, unable to lie. “They’re not,” he says with a sigh. “We were talking about this woman Dip likes and how she asked him to teach her about life and sex, and I was just being a dick.” He reaches out to touch his wife, but she backs away. “You are my only fantasy.”

Grace and Sami exchange a look before they both bust up laughing. When she sobers, Grace smiles at Duck. “Nice save.”

Sami steps between the two men and slips onto a stool. “So, Dip, tell us about this girl.”

“Nope.” I shake my head. “Not doing it. I can’t have this conversation with chicks.”

I walk away, their laughter trailing after me until I exit the clubhouse and the door bangs shut. As I’m crossing the property to my cabin, I pull out my cell phone, wishing I would’ve gotten Kennedy’s number.

We never made plans before she escaped back into Barlow’s after we talked, and despite my reservations, I want to get started. I know I might live to regret it because if either of us is going to wind up hurt at the end of this, it’s going to be me, but that doesn’t seem to matter. Not really.

She’ll be worth the pain.

I have no idea how I know that, but I do. I know it as sure as I know my given name is Carson Willis.

Fortunately, Jenny and I exchanged numbers when I returned to the bar to escort the three drunk girls home last weekend, so I fire off a quick text.

Me: Hey Jenny. It’s Dip. What’s Kennedy’s cell number?

Barlow’s is open for business, so I’m surprised when my phone pings almost instantly with her reply.

Jenny: Why?

Me: Wanna talk to her about the security setup tomorrow

Jenny: Is that all you want to talk to her about???

Me: Yep

Jenny: R U sure about that? You don’t want to talk to her about your little chat earlier?

Well, shit.

Jenny: Yeah… she told me.

Me: Okay. So can I have her number or not?

Jenny: Under one condition…

Me: What is it with women and conditions?

Jenny: From what K said, you had some conditions of your own

Me: Fine. What’s the damn condition?

Jenny: Don’t break her heart. I know I haven’t known her long, but she’s been through a lot and deserves the best

Me: I won’t break her heart

Jenny: Promise?

A growl rumbles from my chest as frustration settles in. There’s nothing I can say that will convince her that Kennedy is safe with me. Or her heart is, at least. So I don’t even bother to try.

Me: Are you gonna give me the number or not?

Jenny: If U hurt her, I’ll kill you… 401-555-4145
