“Okay. I should be here by one, at the latest.” She winks. “Have a good night, you two.”

And then she’s gone, leaving Kennedy practically jumping out of her too-sensible tennis shoes.

“C’mon.” I rest my hand on the small of her back. “Let’s get you upstairs so you can get some sleep.”

Kennedy nods and scurries ahead of me, clearly uncomfortable. I don’t know if she’s worried I’m going to jump her the moment we get in the apartment or what, but she shouldn’t. The more time I spend with her, the more I realize that, regardless of what she says, she’s not ready to dive into a life of sin.

She’s going to require that patience she asked for, yes. But this situation is delicate, and I need to treat it as such. I don’t want to simply teach her my ways.

I want to make her fall in love with them, and me, and not be able to bear the thought of walking away when she’s done figuring herself out.

Chapter14

Kennedy

“So, tell me everything.”

Glancing up from the laptop, I shake my head at Jenny. Some of the Satan’s Legacy brothers have been here for a few hours, setting up the new security system, but Dip is nowhere in sight, which leaves me feeling empty.

“There’s nothing to tell.”

“How can there be nothing to tell?” she demands. “When I left, Dip was ready to jump your bones.”

“I don’t know what to say.” I shrug. “He walked me upstairs, kissed me on the cheek, and then left.”

“He… No. No, no, no.” She turns in a circle as if looking for something. “Where is he?”

I can’t stop my laugh at her obvious disappointment. “Don’t know. He didn’t come with the others this morning.”

Jenny huffs out a breath as she tosses her purse onto the bar and digs through it. When she pulls out her cell, unease skates through me.

“What are you doing?”

“I’m calling Dip to give him a piece of my mind.” I lunge for her phone, but she ducks out of the way as she dials and puts it to her ear. “Hey, Dip,” she says, so I know he answered. “Where the fuck are you?” Her scowl slips. “Oh, well… okay.” Jenny darts her eyes to me. “Yeah, she’s here, but no, you can’t talk to her. Call her yourself if you want to.”

She disconnects the call and shoves her phone into her back pocket. My phone rings before I even have a chance to ask her what he said.

I don’t recognize the number on the screen, so I ignore the call. My parents have been calling nonstop since I didn’t show up to their stupid matchmaking dinner, and it would be just like them to call from a friend’s phone to force me to answer.

As I’m setting my cell down, it pings with a notification. I flip it back over and see a text notification from the same unknown number.

Huh. My parents don’t text.

I tap on the notification, and my lips curve into a smile.

Unknown: Hey gorgeous. It’s Dip. Answer the phone

A second later, my phone rings again, and I answer it this time.

“Hi, Dip.”

“Mornin’.”

“It’s afternoon.”

“Yeah, well, I didn’t get to say good morning this morning so… mornin’.”

“I thought you were going to be here for the installation.”
