After settling me into the passenger seat of the Corvette, Dip hurries around the hood and climbs in. He makes quick work of starting the engine and tearing away from the curb. His jaw is clenched, and his knuckles are white from the death grip he has on the steering wheel.

“What’s wrong?” I ask.

I was the one who was punched.

“What’s wrong?” he seethes. “What’s wrong?!”

“Yeah.”

“A man put his hands on you, that’s what’s wrong,” he clips out.

Dip pulls his cell phone out of his vest, cutting off further discussion. He shoots off a quick text before pocketing the device.

“Grace will meet us at the ER entrance,” he declares.

“Who’s Grace?”

He slides his eyes to me and smirks. It’s infuriating, but I’ll take that over his rage. “Jealous?”

“No.”

“And you said you didn’t know how to lie,” he taunts.

If my muscles could tense any more, they would. “Who is she?”

Dip sighs. “She’s Duck’s ol’ lady, and she’s a nurse.”

“Oh.”

“She can check you out, and if she thinks you need to see a doc, she’ll make sure it’s one we can trust.”

“Okay.”

“On a scale of one to ten, how’s your pain level?” he asks.

“I thought Grace was the nurse.” When he glares at me, I cave. “A nine with the ice. It’s numbed it a little.”

Dip nods slightly. “I’m sorry I wasn’t there.”

“It’s not your fault, Dip. Just like it wasn’t Jenny’s. I pissed Bryce off, he hit me, end of story.”

“Not even close toend of story,” he snarls. “He’ll pay for his mistakes, trust me on that.”

“Do I even want to know?”

He shrugs. “Probably not.”

The sign for the hospital entrance comes into view, and Dip pulls into park. He helps me out of the car before lifting me into his arms again.

“I can walk,” I mutter. “He hit me in the face, not my legs.”

“Kennedy?”

“What?” I huff out.

“Shut up and let me take care of you.”
