“B-because she took my job,” he whines.

I lift the pickaxe and swing it, sending the pointed metal end to pierce his thigh. Bryce screams in agony, his shrieks going straight to the dark parts of me that thrive on violence.

When I yank the pickaxe out of his flesh, blood gushes from his leg, telling me I hit his femoral artery. I would’ve preferred to drag this out, but no such luck.

“Looks like our time is up,” I seethe. “Pity. I was looking forward to hurting you some more.”

Bryce’s head starts to loll to the side as he struggles to stay conscious. “P-please,” he slurs. “Help.”

I step up to him and grab a fistful of his shirt to spin him around. “Oh, I’ll help you all right.”

Glancing at the weapon, I make sure the bloody pointed end is directed at his back, and then I thrust it between his shoulder blades. When death finally takes him, it’s not nearly as satisfying as I’d hoped.

“That’s your version of twisted?” Magic taunts as he pushes off the wall.

“Didn’t mean to hit his fucking artery,” I snarl. “I hate when shit goes wrong.”

“He’s dead, so…” He shrugs. “Not sure how wrong it went. Other than I didn’t get to have any fun.”

“Yeah, well…”

I yank the ax out of Bryce’s back and toss it on the floor. Once a weapon is used, we dispose of it with the body and replace it with a fresh one. That way, if anyone ever comes looking, all they find is a bare-bones hunting shed.

“Go back home,” Magic instructs. “I’ll deal with this.”

My adrenaline is waning, so I do as I’m told. Besides, I want to get back to Kennedy. Now that the threat—if you could call it that—is eliminated, I need to be with her.

Despite the bone-weary exhaustion settling in, I make it back to my cabin even faster than I made it to the shed. I climb the steps on the front porch, and when I open the door, I hear female laughter.

She’s awake.

I wasn’t gone that long, so I’m a little surprised, but then I remember I asked Sami to come sit with her.

Aw, shit.

Chapter16

Kennedy

“Ithink your jailer is home.”

I smile at Sami. When Dip left, I hadn’t been asleep, and when I heard the door to his cabin open again, a warm sensation filled my veins. But then a woman stepped into the bedroom, and hope that he was coming back to me fled. Despite my protests and bitchy attitude, I was grateful he wanted to take care of me. It felt good to be on the receiving end of some affection.

Sami apologized profusely for waking me up, but I managed to assure her that she didn’t. We’ve been gabbing like schoolgirls ever since.

The door to the bedroom opens, and there stands my ‘jailer’. Dip’s covered in blood and still manages to be the sexiest man I’ve ever laid eyes on. He leans against the door frame and crosses his arms over his chest.

“You look like you’re feeling better,” he drawls.

“The pain meds took the edge off.”

“I guess I should be going,” Sami says as she stands from the edge of the king-sized bed. “It was great to meet you, Kennedy. Don’t be a stranger.”

“She won’t.”

“I won’t.”

Dip and I speak simultaneously, and he winks at me.
