Kennedy trails her fingers over the skull on my left pec, then moves to the flag on the other side. Her eyes darken the more she explores, and it’s all I can do not to strip her out of her own clothes and give my own inspection of what she’s hiding beneath them.

“Like what you see?” I ask when the silence stretches out.

“Very much.”

She circles me and traces the Satan’s Legacy MC emblem that spans the entire expanse of my back.

“This is the same thing that’s on the back of your vest, isn’t it?”

“Cut,” I correct. “The vest is called a cut. And yes, it’s the same.”

“It’s beautiful.”

“Do you have any tattoos?” I ask.

Immediately, I want to kick myself. Of course, she doesn’t.

“No, but I’d like one,” she admits.

“Really?” I turn around to face her. “Any idea what you’d get?”

She shrugs. “I don’t know. Something colorful.” Kennedy lifts her eyes to mine. “I have a confession to make.”

“That doesn’t sound good.”

“I’m not worried about showering alone.”

“Okay.”

“I’m a nurse, Dip. I know I don’t have a concussion.”

“You’re a nurse?”

“Well, I have a nursing degree. The only healthcare I’ve ever done was when Michael needed me to care for him through his lung cancer. But I know the signs of a concussion, and I’ve had one before. I don’t have one now.”

“Then why’d you come in here?”

“Because I thought you were just gonna change, but then the shower turned on.” She turns her head away, but I lightly grab her chin and force her to face me. She heaves a sigh. “Sorry, I’m not used to this.”

“I know. And it’s lesson number one for your new life. No more hiding from me. I can’t stand it.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Lesson number two… Don’t apologize for shit like that. I’m not mad, and there’s no reason to be sorry. But if you want to figure out who you are, you need to own whoever that turns out to be. Own your shit, Kennedy. There’s nothing wrong with that.”

“I’m…” She catches herself and smiles shyly. “Okay. I’ll work on it.”

“Thank you. Now, you were talking about the shower turning on,” I remind her, trying to get back on topic.

“Right, the shower. I’ve always thought showering with a man would be fun.”

“Fun?”

“Yeah. I mean… Shit, why is this so hard? I don’t even know what I’m doing. All I know is I imagined you naked in here, and then I was opening the stupid door because I wanted to see you for real and not in my head.”

So much for taking things slow or being a damn gentleman.

My lips curve into a grin. “Kennedy?”
