“Finally,” Dip mutters.
“Dip, I—”
“I need to know, Kennedy,” he rasps.
“Need to know?”
“Did he… What did he do to you?”
“Does it matter?”
Please don’t matter.
He shakes his head and leans forward to brush a kiss across my lips. “No, Kennedy. It doesn’t matter, not in the sense that it changes anything I feel for you. But I need to know. I just…”
“If I don’t tell you, you won’t be able to let it go? Is that it?”
“Yeah, baby, that’s it.”
“He didn’t rape me, Dip. He threw me to the floor, cut me up a little, but he didn’t rape me.”
He releases a long breath, exhaling some of his worry away. Dip shifts so his back is against the wall and pulls me onto his lap.
“I was so scared, Kennedy. When Snow told me you hadn’t made it into work…” He swallows. “I can’t lose you.”
“I’m right here.” I link my fingers with his, settling both our hands against my stomach. “I’m here, and I’m okay.”
“You’re moving in with me,” he says flatly.
I smile. “Okay.”
“And I want you to quit working here.”
“No.”
“Excuse me? This job could’ve cost you your life.”
I drop his hand and turn around to straddle his lap. “But it didn’t, Dip. I didn’t die. And men like him,” I say, tipping my head towardthat fuck. “They won’t cease to exist if I stop working here. So, no, I won’t stop. I love it here. I love Jenny. Please don’t ask me to give up something I finally found for myself.”
He arches a brow. “What if I insisted?”
“Do you really want to test that theory?”
Dip heaves a sigh. “No. And for the record, I’d never insist. But I will be your shadow any time you’re here.”
“I can live with that.” I smile. “And for the record, if you insisted, I’d probably cave. But thank you for not making me.”
“I should probably get you to Grace so she can check out the cuts you got,” he says with malice in his tone. “I can’t believe he cut you.”
“Cuts heal.”
“But they leave scars.”
“Do you care about scars?”
“No, not the physical ones. But the mental ones… Yeah, I care about those. I don’t want you to hurt in any way.”
“I’ll be okay.”
