“We can start next week,if that works for you.”

I shift the phone from one ear to the other as I watch Soul hover around Cece like she’s going to break at any moment. Her being pregnant is great, but I worry that Soul is gonna lose his damn mind waiting on the baby to get here. Never mind what happens to him when he actuallyseeshis kid.

“Mr. Grandon?”

“Oh, yeah, sorry, Hank. Next week is great,” I say to the contractor. “I appreciate you fitting this into your schedule so fast. I really want the renovations done as soon as possible.”

He chuckles. “So you’ve said. I have to say, I’m really looking forward to this project. When you guys came to me to rebuild that boutique, I was hesitant, to say the least.”

“We have that effect on people,” I say dryly, not sure where he’s going with this.

“I can imagine.” Hank chuckles again. “But I’ve never met a better bunch of guys. Normally, customers will come to the worksite and pick apart what my crew has done or bitch about one thing or another, but that didn’t happen with you. You showed us all respect, and that meant a lot. So, yeah, Mr. Grandon, I’m fitting you in on my crew’s schedule. It’s my pleasure.”

It never ceases to amaze me how wrong society’s perception of bikers is. No doubt Hank would be shocked if he saw beneath the surface, if he knew what Saints Purgatory does in the dark, but that’ll never happen. All he needs to see, all society needs to know is that we’re sinking money into our community and doing whatever we can to make the world a better place.

It’s as simple and as complicated as that.

“Glad you came around,” I say. “You’re the best in the business, and the only person I want handling this.”

“Just make sure you put that in your Yelp review,” he teases.

“Man, we don’t do Yelp, but rest assured, people will know.”

“Appreciate it.”

Soul lifts his hand and snaps to get my attention. I hold a finger up, letting him know I’ll be there in a second.

“Look, Hank, I gotta get going,” I begin. “But I just got the keys to the building this morning, so just let me know when a good time is, and I’ll meet you there to hand them over. We can also go over all the final details so you and your guys can get started.”

“Sounds good. I’ll be in touch.”

I disconnect the call and stride toward Soul and Cece. When I’m within earshot, I can’t help but shake my head at my president.

“... to fuck but sitting on a stool without a backrest is too much?” Cece snaps, arms crossed over her chest.

“Jesus, brother,” I mutter when I slide onto a stool. “What did you do now?”

“I simply pointed out that my beautifulpregnantold lady might be more comfortable at one of the tables because she could lean on the backrest instead of slightly hunched over and squishing my kid.”

“You were simply…” Cece squares her shoulders. “I’ve got news for you, Soul. Your kid would probably prefer not to be constantly and repeatedly poked in the damn head by its daddy’s cock!”

She storms off in a huff, muttering something about men and their ‘alpha stupidity’. Soul glares at her retreating back for a second before his gaze drops to her ass, and a dopey grin spreads across his face.

I clear my throat, and he whips his head in my direction.

“I fuckin’ love that woman,” he declares.

“Are you sure she loves you right now?” I ask, my lips twitching.

“Oh, don’t you worry about that,” he says. “She’ll be begging for it later, and all will be forgiven.”

“No disrespect, but if you don’t quit hounding her, I doubt you’ll have anything left for her to beg for.”

“I…” He narrows his eyes and cups his crotch with both hands. “Shit.”

“Yeah.”

“Dammit,” he mutters. “I’m gonna have to apologize, aren’t I?”
