With that, Grim leaves me alone in the gym. I hate to admit it, but he’s right. I need to sort through whatever shit Mark resurrected when he showed up. And there lies the crux of the problem.

Resurrection.

All roads lead back to a past better left dead and buried.

“Fuck!”

“Thanks for coming out tonight!”I shout to the crowd before turning to make my way backstage.

As soon as the red velvet curtain that separates me from the audience swings closed, I’m scooped off my feet and spun around.

Mark stops turning in circles and sets me down. “That was the best set you’ve done.”

“It felt good,” I say with a laugh. “I was a little worried at the beginning when my voice wobbled but luckily, I pulled it together quickly.”

“I doubt anyone noticed. Everyone was mesmerized by your voice.”

I was so nervous tonight when I first stepped onto the stage. This is the biggest crowd I’ve played for since arriving in Vegas, so Mark’s observation is welcome.

“I wonder what everyone will perform next month?” I ask as I make my way to the dressing room.

Once a month, Amelia holds showcases to give all the singers a chance to highlight their best songs. There are four of us who perform regularly at the casinos she manages the talent for: Me, Kyle, Mara, and Sydney. We’re all musicians trying to make our way onto the bigger music scene and are very supportive of one another.

I love the showcases because I can focus more on my own songs rather than covers, but they also make me nervous. There are several music producers and talent scouts who come to Vegas every month to recruit singers and songwriters.

Next month will be the first time they’re coming to a casino Amelia manages, that we know of. Rumor has it they’ll be staying at the Blue Rose Casino.

Kyle rushes down the hallway toward me, cutting off my thoughts. “Hey, Apple, great set!”

“Thanks, Kyle. Yours was too,” I admit, and it was. Kyle has a deep baritone voice that could melt butter.

“Listen,” Kyle begins. “I’ve been toying around with an idea and wanted to see if you’d be willing to work on a project with me before next month’s showcase.”

We reach the dressing room, and I open the door. “Come in, and we can talk.” I wave him inside.

“I’m gonna go see what Mara’s up to,” Mark says before he spins around and heads toward the dressing room Mara’s using.

“Behave!” I call after him, but he just flips me off as he knocks on her door.

Mara and Mark are the same age, and I know behaving is the last thing on their minds. I couldn’t care less as long as Mark doesn’t get hurt. But he swears that they’re just having fun.

I walk across the room and reach into the mini fridge to grab a drink. “Want some water?” I ask Kyle.

“That’d be great, thanks.”

I hand him a bottle of water and sit, giving him my full attention.

“I take it you heard about the talent scouts coming to the show next month at the Rose,” Kyle says.

“Sure did.” I grin. “I’m excited about it.”

“Me too,” he admits. “I had an idea to bring some attention to our gigs.”

“Whose gigs?”

He waves his finger between us. “Yours and mine.”

“What about Mara and Sydney?”
