“Don’t get me wrong, they’re great,” he says. “But I’ve been playing around with this idea since I heard you sing.”

“What’d you have in mind?”

“I was wondering if you’d sing a duet with me.”

That is definitely not what I was expecting. “Okay, but again, why not ask Mara or Sydney?”

Like I said, we support each other, but it’s still every man or woman for themselves. We all want to be discovered because of our own talent, which is less likely to happen when performing as a duet. Even still, I don’t understand why he’s focusing on me. He’s known them longer, so it would stand to reason that he’d ask them.

“I love those two, but the sound I’m going for is deep baritone with husky alto.”

He’s got me there. That describes my voice perfectly, and he’s right, together we would be phenomenal. Mara and Sydney are both sopranos and have beautiful voices, but I understand what he means about wanting a certain sound.

I sit back while I contemplate what he’s asking of me.

“I know what you’re thinking.” Kyle says as he leans back against the couch cushion. “I don’t want to form a partnership or anything. We’d still have our own performances. What I’m thinking is that we sing the duet in between our individual sets, if Amelia is willing to schedule us back-to-back. It’s a way to keep our names in the forefront, plus a great closing and opening for the both of us.”

“True.” What he saysdoesmake sense. “I just don’t want Mara or Sydney to think we’re conspiring against them to get ahead.”

“We can talk to them about it if you want. They might even decide to do the same thing.” Kyle grins. “Shit, that’s not a bad idea. Then all four of us would have a way to keep everyone wanting more.”

“Alright,” I say with a nod. “Let’s talk to them and see what they say. If they’re on board, we can discuss the possibility of a duet.”

“Sounds good to me. What are you doing tomorrow?”

“Sleeping.” I yawn before I continue. “But I can be available after one.”

“Great.” Kyle stands. “I’ll text them and see if they can meet us at Dobb’s for a late lunch. Does that work for you?”

“I’ll be there.” I stand and walk him to the door. “It’s a great idea so I hope that it works out for everyone.”

“Me too, I’m glad I asked. I’ll see ya tomorrow.” Kyle opens the door, and Mark is standing there with his hand raised as if he was about to knock.

“See ya then,” I reply.

After Kyle leaves, Mark steps into the dressing room and closes the door behind him.

“What’s going on tomorrow?” Mark asks as he saunters over to the loveseat and plops down.

“Did you have a nice quickie?”

“A gentleman never kisses and tells.” Marks wiggles his eyebrows. “Quit stalling. What’s going on?”

I take a deep breath and then explain Kyle’s idea to him. The more I think about it, the more excited I get about the possibility of singing with someone else. It shows scouts that, not only can I hold my own, but I can also work with other artists.

“I like it. I do have a suggestion before you agree to it.”

“Hit me.”

"I think you should draw up a contract or something that ensures you're not stuck singing this duet with him if either of you is offered a contract of your own. This is a one-time thing, not the start to a long-running partnership."

“That’s a good idea,” I agree. “And I don’t think Kyle will have a problem with it since it was his idea to keep our careers separate. He wants us to use this to bridge the acts and keep our names on their minds.”

“Even if that’s his intention, never hurts to protect yourself.” Mark leans forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “I’d also suggest that you don’t sing any originals with him. That way he can’t come back and claim the song as his. Your work stays yours, and Kyle’s stays his. Stick to songs that are already duets.”

I wink and grin. “See, this is why you’re my manager.”

“I’m not your manager,” he scoffs. “I’ve been begging you to get alegitmanager.”
