After the waitress takes our orders, Kyle starts explaining his idea. He convinces Mara and Sydney that this could work and be beneficial to them as well. By the time we’re done eating lunch, we’ve all agreed to give it a shot for a couple of weeks to see how we all feel about the new setup.

“Well, now that we’ve agreed to do the duets, we need to see if Amelia will change the line-up so we can follow each other,” Sydney inserts.

“Who’s going to talk to her?” Mara asks.

“Amelia’s good with it,” Kyle replies with a grin. “I ran it by her before I came over. Just had to see if you ladies would be interested.”

“What?” I demand, surprised by his audacity. “You had no idea if Mara and Sydney would even be willing.”

Kyle puts his hands up in surrender. “I know, but I knewyouwere on board, and I didn’t want to come to this meeting without knowing if Amelia would even allow it,” he explains. “I wasn’t trying to pull anything, I swear.”

Mara nods. “Makes sense, I guess. It would’ve sucked to get hyped up only to be told that Amelia didn’t like the idea.”

“True,” I agree as the excitement bubbles up again. “So… When do we start?”

“You okay?”

I nod at Soul and tuck my Glock into my saddlebags. Grim, Thorn, Spike, and Asher are standing next to their own Harleys, each diligently checking their weapons. Church ended twenty minutes ago, and we have a new sinner to purge.

“Are we sure the wife won’t be home?”

“You heard Jez,” Soul says. “She’s monitoring Barrett’s security system, but she also hacked into the wife’s email and determined that she’s going on a shopping trip to New York City and won’t return for three days.”

Grim steps up next to me and grins. “Fucker’s gonna stink to high heaven by the time she gets back.” He tilts his head. “I wonder if the missus will be sad or happy that we took care of the philandering pissant.”

I don’t question how he knows what we’re saying. I learned long ago that if there are brothers around, someone is going to sign because they don’t want to get fined.

“As long as she gets the life insurance payout, I don’t think she’ll care.” Soul pulls his cell out of his cut and taps on the screen before turning the device so we can see it. “Remember, this is the girl we’re doing this for. I couldn’t care less about the wife.”

Grim and I stare at the image of Brenda, the woman we’re going to avenge. Jezebel came to the club a week ago, saying she had a potential case. None of us could have predicted we’d be riding to some fancy suburb of Phoenix, Arizona, but that’s exactly where we’re heading tonight.

“I can’t believe we thought Janice was the sinner.” Grim shakes his head.

“Shewastrying to hire a hitman,” Thorn says as he joins us. “Not exactly a leap to lump her in with the other sinners we eliminate.”

Fortunately for Janice, Jez is damn good at what she does. Pretending to be a hitman, Jez made contact with Janice and spent time digging into the woman’s story. Turns out, her younger sister, Brenda, was an addict who was working as a confidential informant for Detective Zion Barrett of the Phoenix PD.

Janice spent months begging and pleading with anyone who would listen to get her sister help for her addiction, but nothing ever happened. As long as Brenda was deemed an asset, her well-being was inconsequential. And then she was killed during what was supposed to be a controlled drug buy, and Janice changed her tactics.

“She’s a kindergarten teacher,” Spike says.

“And looks can be deceiving,” I snap. “Just because someone walks the walk and talks the talk doesn’t mean they’re free from sin.”

“But in this case, she is,” Spike counters.

“Look, we’ve already gone through the judgment phase,” Soul begins. “Janice isn’t our target so let’s forget about her. We need to focus on Barrett.” He shoves his cell back into his pocket. “Ready to ride?”

We all nod before straddling our Harleys. Within seconds, the garage fills with the rumble of our engines, and the sound acts as a balm to my frayed nerves. Soul and I lead the way, and sand kicks up as we cross the desert to put distance between us and the clubhouse.

Just over four hours later, we’re parking along a quiet street on the outskirts of Phoenix so we can walk the rest of the way to Barrett’s house on the cul-de-sac. When his two-story fortress comes into view, my pulse kicks up and sweat trickles down my back, but I don’t know if it’s from the heat or the anticipation.

I live for this shit. Purging a sinner is always a bright spot in what amounts to the very dark days of my existence. Especially since Mark returned.

“We go in, purge, and get out,” Soul signs.

As annoying as it can be to always have to use ASL, it comes in handy when stealth is imperative for the success of our mission.

“Did Jez give you Barrett’s location inside the house?” Asher asks.
