“Yeah, because staring down an unarmed female who is clearly smaller than you and threatening her is a great way to convey that message.” I roll my eyes.

“Babe, back up,” the redhead at the table tells him.

If looks could kill, I’d be dead and buried right now. Soul’s gaze locks on mine, and his lip curls in a sneer, but he does back up a step.

“We don’t fucking know you,” he finally barks and then points his finger at Mark. “Or what the hell he’s been up to. For all we know, you’re bringing trouble to our door.”

“You sure didn’t have a fucking problem takingourhelp when Mark dragged you and your girlfriend’s lifeless bodies out of a burning building,” I seethe. “Nor did you have a fucking problem giving me directions to yoursecret clubhouseafter the cops and firemen showed up.” I take a deep breath before continuing. “Wedid that, no questions asked. Where the hell do you get off asking us any questions about who I am or what Mark’s been up to now? Fuck you all.” I turn and link my arm through Mark’s. “Mark, let’s go back to Vegas.”

“You’re not going anywhere.” Soul steps in front of the doorway, blocking our exit.

“The fuck we aren’t,” I growl. “I can read a person pretty well, and you are not a good person.”

“Apple, is it?” Souls asks mockingly. “Markisfamily, and he isn’t going anywhere withyouuntil I get some fucking answers.”

“Excuse me? Answers? You want fucking answers?” I snicker. “If Markisyour fucking family, why do you have so many questions?”

Soul nods but cocks his head and stares at me like I’m a puppy getting ready to do a trick.

“WellSoul, before I tell you anything about myself, where the fuck haveyoubeen?” I demand.

“Right fucking here, all afternoon.”

“No,Mr. President, where the fuck were youfive years agowhen I found Mark outside a bar with nothing but the clothes on his back and malnourished?” I step away from Mark, into Soul’s space. “Where the fuck was hisfamilywhen he was sick, andIwas the one taking care of him? Where the fuck was hisfamilywhen he had no money, no home, and nothing to eat? Huh? Where the fuck was his family?!”

Soul’s scowl falls into a look of disbelief, and he shifts his attention to Mark before he speaks. “What the fuck is she talking about?”

“You don’t talk to him,” I snap. “You’re talking tomenow.”

“I need fucking answers,” Soul repeats.

“No, we’re lea—” A coughing fit wracks my body.

Mark grabs my arm and pulls me toward a chair before urging me to sit. The redhead jumps up and comes back with a glass of water, and I’m able to catch my breath long enough to take a drink.

“Can we keep her?” Red winks at me. “I like her.”

“Um, thanks… I think.” My eyebrows pinch in confusion as I stare at her. I was just accused of bringing trouble to their door, and now this woman is asking if she can keep me.

I’ve stepped into The Twilight Zone.

“I’m Cece, the woman you both saved the night of the fire. I, for one, am eternally grateful.” Cece nods in Soul’s direction. “Not many can put Soul in his place, so thank you.”

“Cece,” Soul growls.

“What?” Cece asks innocently, batting her eyes. “It’s true, caveman.”

Soul stalks over to pull Cece into his arms and brings his mouth down to hers. The kiss he lays on her curls my toes.

Damn, that’s hot.

I’m sick, not dead. I can only hope to have that someday.

“I’m Jez,” the other woman says, making me tear my gaze away from the show in front of me. “Soul’s twin.”

Now that she says it, I do see the family resemblance. “Apple,” I cough out.

“Apple, I’ll grab our stuff, and we can go.” Mark leans down and looks into my eyes. “But before we head back to Vegas, I’m dragging your ass to a clinic. You need antibiotics.”
