“Shut up,” I snap.

“Can we get back to the van?” Mark asks.

“Yes, we can,” Soul says with authority. “Do you know anyone who would cut the wire?”

Mark leans back in his chair and appears to think about it, but then he shakes his head. “No. Everyone loves Apple.”

“So, there’s no one who has a grudge against her, no one who would want to hurt her?”

“No. I can’t th—” Mark’s eyes widen, and he presses his lips together so tightly, the edges turn white.

“What?” I bark. “What did you just think of?”

“It’s probably nothing,” he says. “I mean, it was five years ago.”

“I don’t give a shit if you remember something from twenty years ago,” I growl. “If it could help us figure out who’s fucking with Apple, then spit it out.”

“It’s just…” Mark sighs, and my respect for him ratchets up a notch. He’s a dick, but it’s clear he doesn’t want to betray Apple. “What has she told you about when she and I met?”

“Nothing.”

“Dammit… okay.” Mark rises from the chair and begins to pace. “It was about five years ago, and I was in Indiana. I don’t remember exactly what I was doing other than minding my own business when…”

Mark drones on for a few minutes about how he came across Apple being attacked in the back parking lot of a bar. The longer he talks, the more rigid with fury I become. Who the hell would do that to a woman?

Sinners, that’s who.

“Anyway,” Mark says as he starts to wind down. “Their names were Jason and Travis, but I don’t know their last names. They were out cold when we left, and the last we hear—”

“Soul?!”

Mark freezes in his tracks as Soul shoots to his feet.

“Jez?” Prez asks. “What the fu—”

“I hacked into the room's intercom system, get over it,” she snarls. “I’ve got bigger problems at the moment. I need you.”

Instantly, all the brothers are on their feet and moving toward Soul as he talks to Jez through the two-way system.

“What’s going on?” Soul demands.

“My security system picked up two unknowns circling my property a few minutes ago.” Her voice is shaky, which sets my nerves on edge. Jez doesn’t get shaky. “I thought my alarms would warn them off, but they’re currently trying to break down my door.”

Thank fuck we reinforced that years ago.

“Call the cops, Jez,” Soul orders as he makes his way toward the door. “We’ll be there as soon as we can.”

“No cops!” she shouts, and Soul stiffens.

“Why? If they’re tryin—”

“They’re not here for me,” she says. “They’re screaming for Apple.”

“What the fuck?” I snarl.

“Just get here, okay,” Jez pleads. “They can’t get inside, but even if they could, I’m hidden. I’m fine, but something is going on. Just fucking get here.”

“Jez, can you grab a screenshot from your security system and send it to me?” Fort asks as he pulls out his phone. “While the others are on their way, Lock and I can stay behind and gather as much info on them as possible.”
