Apple whirls around at my voice, and her free hand flies to her chest. “Jeez, you scared me.”

“Babe, if you’re gonna be dressed like that, you might want to be more aware of your surroundings.”

Now that she’s facing me, I take a moment to appreciate her body. The lace of the panties is delicate and hides nothing from my view. The purple and black bra completes the look, and her nipples pebble under my perusal.

“You like?”

I level my gaze on her eyes and grin. “I love.” I close the distance between us in three strides and pull her flush against my chest. “But please tell me it wasn’t expensive.”

Confusion flits across her face. “Why?”

Leaning in, I nip at her bottom lip. “Because it’s gonna be on the floor in about ten seconds. I’d hate for you to have wasted your money.”

Apple laughs, and the sound travels to my balls. “I’m glad you like it.” She pushes away from me. “But I’m dessert.” “She steps to the side and nods at the plates of food. “Those are the main course.”

“You expect me to eat with you dressed like that?”

She grins. “Yep.”

“You give me more credit than you should.”

“Would it make it easier if I put a robe on while we eat?”

“A robe isnotgoing to erase my memory,” I tell her wryly. “But yeah, you better put one on.”

Apple traipses across the room to disappear into the bathroom. When she returns, she’s covered up with white terrycloth, and I release a breath.

“Better?” she asks, smirking.

“A little.” I adjust myself before stepping toward the room service cart, and she laughs. “This all looks incredible.”

“I wanted to celebrate.” She starts to unload the cart and carry the plates to the small table, so I help her. “I’m finally getting a break, Malice,” she says excitedly. “This really could be it, ya know?”

My stomach twists. “I know. I’m proud of you.”

Apple stills and lifts her eyes to mine. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing, why?”

Her forehead wrinkles with concern, and she studies me for a moment like a human lie detector and then shakes her head. “Nope, not buying it.”

“I’m fine.”

Rather than argue, Apple waits me out. We start eating, and we’re halfway through the meal by the time I work up the courage to tell her what’s bothering me.

“I can’t go to California,” I blurt and pop another bite of steak in my mouth.

Apple’s hand freezes, her fork hovering above her plate. “Um, okay.” She shoves the bite of baked potato in her mouth and chews slowly. “Is that what’s bothering you?” she asks after swallowing.

“No… yes…” I heave a sigh. “Yeah. I can’t be that far from the club. If something were to happen, it’d take too long to get back.”

“Makes sense. But…”

“But what?”

“But I’m not going to put my life on hold because you can’t travel,” she says. “And I’m definitely not passing up this chance.”

“Even though we’re together now?” I counter. “You’d walk away from that?”
