JASON

“Dammit!” The ointment seemed to be working but the redness is only slightly lighter and there is still pus coming out of the cut. “This is the last thing I need right now.”

I cleaned it up with some peroxide and bandages then texted my friend Jesse. You mentioned knowing a doctor, right? Does he have a dog?

Jesse texted back immediately.I don’t think so. Why?

I need a doctor and I was hoping I could barter for meds. I don’t exactly have insurance.Or a lot of extra cash to pay full price.

The phone started to ring as I was hobbling to the couch. I knew who it was before I even looked at the screen. Whenever Jesse had to respond with more than a few words via text, he got tired of typing and just called. “Whaddup?”

“Are you at home?” He wasn’t always big on greetings.

“Yeah. I canceled my dogs for the day. My foot is killing me.” I’d been walking twice as many dogs over the past week so I could earn extra money. And I did have quite a bit of cash set aside but emergency room visits weren’t cheap so I’d hoped I could hold off a few more days. But if I wanted to keep my foot, I needed to do something sooner rather than later.

“Harris said we’ll be there in five. He’s already called Tony to make sure he’s got time to fit you in.”

Thank god! “Okay, I’ll start working my way to the street. It’ll take me that long to get there.”

I slipped on my flip flops because regular shoes didn’t fit around the gauze, and then I headed out to the curb where I knew Harris would pull up. Harris was Jesse’s Daddy. Not in the parental sense, but in the hot Daddy who takes care of his boy in the sexiest ways possible sense. Jesse hadn’t even been looking for a Daddy when he met Harris, but he lucked out.

Harris was kind and loving and gave him everything he wanted. But Jesse never took advantage of his generosity. He was a good boy.

That’s how he got Harris.

I, on the other hand, had been called a brat on more than one occasion. Which was why none of the Daddies I’d ever dated wanted to stick around. But that was okay. I’d gotten used to being alone. And I had all my dogs to keep me company.

Not technically mine since my landlord didn’t allow pets, but the dogs I walked every day were like my own. And they loved me unconditionally, unlike some jerky Daddy who didn’t appreciate a little snark and sass now and then.

Before I wandered too far down the rabbit hole of sadness and self-loathing, I heard a truck rumbling down the road and saw Jesse waving at me from the passenger seat.

As soon as the truck was stopped at the curb, Jesse flung open the door and hopped out. “Jason, can you climb in by yourself or do you need Harris to lift you?”

I smiled at his naiveté and shook my head. “I’ve got it. Thanks for offering up your big, strong Daddy but I’m not completely helpless…” Before I could finish that thought, a pebble poked up under my sandal and dug right into my cut. “Ow! Well, I’m getting there but I can get in the truck by myself.”

Jesse’s cheeks pinked up at my casual reference to Harris being his Daddy. The relationship was still new to him, and he was a little shy about people knowing their dynamic.

That just made it easier to tease him. “I’m just messing with you, Jess.” I heaved myself into the back seat of the huge pickup and slammed the heavy door shut. “I really appreciate the ride. And the referral. I was about to look up the cost of an ambulance ride because I wasn’t sure how I was gonna get to the emergency room.”

“It’s no trouble, Jason.” Harris glanced at me through the rearview mirror. “You should have told us sooner that it was getting worse.”

I shrugged. “Yeah, well, I was hoping it would just magically clear up on its own.” I was only half kidding about that. Usually, if I put first-aid ointment on a cut and kept it clean, it did clear up. Eventually. This time might not have been any different if I hadn’t been on my feet for a minimum of eight hours every day.

I needed to get better about resting and taking care of myself. There certainly wasn’t anyone else who was gonna do it.

A few minutes later, we pulled to a stop downtown, right in front of a private clinic.

“Hold tight, Jason.” Harris turned off the engine and hopped out of the truck. Before I even got my seatbelt off, he was opening my door and carefully helping me to the sidewalk, where Jesse was waiting to take my other side.

“Thanks, guys. But I can walk…sorta.”

The glass door swung open, and a sexy silver fox in a medical jacket held it open for us. “Is this my patient?”

“Damn, I hope so.” I did my best to stand tall and walk without a limp. “If you need me to bend over and cough, just say the word.”

He smirked and shook his head slightly. “Well, I guess you’re not in that much pain.”
