I sighed and tried not to let my mind jump to conclusions. “If you want to eat out, we can go.”

“You’re such a good boy.” He kissed me, softly at first and then more passionately.

As always, I got swept away in his touch, forgetting about all my insecurities and questions and just wanting more of it. More of him. More of the perfect life I’d been building with Tony.

I was quiet on the ride to the restaurant, but I let him open the door for me instead of jumping out like I usually did. And when the hostess took us straight to the back room, I didn’t even notice that he hadn’t given her our name.

In fact, I didn’t notice anything at all until a chorus of, “Surprise” filled the room.

I finally looked up and saw all my friends and several of our customers standing around a three layer cake. “What?”

Tony’s arms circled my chest. He pulled me back and whispered in my ear. “Happy birthday, sweetheart.”

“Birthday?” I turned in his arms to face him. “My birthday isn’t until…next week.”

He just shrugged. “That’s why it’s called a surprise party.”

“So…the phone call?” The tangle of knots in my belly finally unraveled. “It was about this?”

He cocked his head. “Yeah, I was telling Harris we were almost ready to leave.”

“Oh, thank god!”

Tony’s eyes narrowed. “Did you think I was talking to a guy?”

I shrugged and my lower lip popped out. “The fear might have crossed my mind…”

He leaned down to kiss me but closed his teeth on my lip and tugged on it. “Never doubt my loyalty to you. Got it?”

I nodded and hugged him tightly, grateful I got one of the good ones. And I’d never doubt his love for me again. “Yes, Daddy.”
