He swallowed and sucked in a breath. “Yes, that sounds perfect. You’re pretty good at this.”

I waited for the server to place glasses of water in front of us and take our orders before responding to him. As soon as we were alone, I looked him in the eye and held his gaze for a moment. “I’m pretty good at what?”

He shrugged like he wasn’t going to speak, but then he finally said, “The Alpha Daddy stuff.”

“Is that what you want? An Alpha Daddy?”

His eyes dropped to his hands. “Maybe, but they usually don’t want me.”

I found that hard to believe. “Why do you say that?”

His chin dropped to his chest and reached for the napkin, still folded next to his plate. After shaking it out, he took his time to arrange it on his lap. Finally, he glanced up at me, and his cocky exterior softened. “I’ve been told I can be a little…feisty.”

I nodded in agreement. “I believe that.”

His eyes searched out mine again. “And I have a bit of a potty mouth.”

I smiled, thinking of all his subtle and not so subtle innuendo. “It’s definitely dirty.”

“And I don’t always…do what I’m told.”

“Is that right?” I drew lines in the condensation on my glass to give myself some space to think about how to address that. “Is that because you like to be punished or because you don’t think you deserve to be rewarded?”

I’d never seen Jason look so vulnerable, but the expression passed quickly and then his bratty façade was back. “If I say I like to be punished, will you spank me?”

“Yes.”

His breath hitched and his tongue ran across the seam of his lips. “Well, then, Alpha Daddy, I’ve been a very naughty boy.”

“Indeed you have.” I closed my eyes and tried to calm my nerves. They were on hyperdrive with this conversation. “And soon enough, I’ll show you exactly what happens to naughty boys.”

“Some day?” Now he was back to his flirty self. “How about tonight?”

I just shook my head and reached across the table to grab his hand. “Soon, naughty boy. Very soon.”

JASON

Tony was amazing.

He smiled when he was supposed to smile. He laughed when he was supposed to laugh. And he put me in my place when I needed it.

Absolutely perfect.

Our dinner went really well, and we had a great time just getting to know each other. So when he walked me to my door and barely kissed my forehead before stepping back, I was confused. I thought he was just kidding about the whole “some day” thing.

I walked inside but he stayed planted where he was on the doormat, and I knew something was wrong. “Aren’t you coming in?”

“Not yet, sweetheart.” Either he was an amazing actor and wasn’t as interested in me as I thought, or he’d changed his mind on the ride home. That was the most likely scenario. Most guys thought I was fun in the moment, but after thinking about spending real time with me, they realized it wasn’t worth the drama.

I wasn’t worth the drama.

“Are you sure?” I hoped he couldn’t see the desperation in my eyes, but I wasn’t sure I was hiding it very well. “I can be good.”

Tony took a step forward and pulled me into his arms without actually stepping over the threshold of my apartment. “I know you can. And I would love to come in, sweetheart. But I think we need to go slow.”

Fuck that. My lower lip popped out, and I crossed my arms over my chest. “But I don’t wanna go slow. I want to go fast. I want you to go fast…and hard.”
