Mr. Stefan was the CEO of the fledging platform I wanted to acquire.
At the conference, we negotiated and agreed on the terms, and all that was left was for Mr. Stefan to sign the contract.
My lawyers had already sent the contract over to him after the conference.
The representative must have been here to hand over the signed documents.
A sliver of eagerness thrummed through my body at the thought of how close I was to achieving my goal for my company.
If we succeeded with this then my company would be catapulted to greater heights.
Soon, the representative entered, led by Clara, before she excused herself and closed the door.
The representative was a woman who appeared to be in her mid-thirties.
She was dressed strictly in formal wear and wore a pair of glasses that sharpened her countenance.
“Good morning, Mr. Cortini,” She greeted.
I carefully observed her and saw that she only came in with a folder in her hand.
“Good morning. I was informed that you’re here on behalf of Mr. Stefan. I hope it’s good news about the partnership between our companies.” I calmly said.
I narrowed her eyes when she cleared her throat.
“You are right. I am indeed here on behalf of Mr. Stefan. Unfortunately, it is not what you wish for. I regret to inform you that we come to a decision regarding the deal you proposed to acquire our payment platform.”
I raised my eyebrows, concealing the unease I felt at the phrasing of her words.
With how she started, it was plain that she didn’t come bearing good news, and this left me confused and my boner quickly flagging down.
“Oh?” That was all I said.
I could see that my unaffected presence made the representative slightly nervous due to the slight twitch in her hand that was holding her folder.
“Mr. Stefan has reconsidered the offer and has decided not to proceed with the acquisition. He has sent back the contract unsigned, indicating his change in mind in selling the platform to you.”
As she spoke, she opened the black folder and handed the contract that my lawyers had sent to her boss back to me.
My eyes lowered to look at the contract she held out to me before slowly raising to look back at her.
I made no effort to take the contract papers back.
Faced with my emotionless stare, she cleared her throat and, instead, placed the paper on my desk.
I was pissed.
What was the meaning of this?
Why had Mr. Stefan suddenly changed his mind?
On the day my team and I approached him, the negotiations had gone well, and he had expressed his eagerness to work with us.
Why the sudden change of decision?
“I'm quite surprised by this turn of events. May I know the reasons behind Mr. Stefan's decision?” I took my time to ask.
“Mr. Stefan has voiced concerns regarding the long-term strategic alignment between our platform and your business goals. Consequently, he believes it would be more advantageous for us to pursue alternative opportunities at this juncture.”
