My heart raced, knowing that I could no longer hide behind the facade of secrecy.

Angela deserved to know the truth about my family.

Chapter 13

Angela

“Angela?”

My heart thumped when I saw the genuine concern in his eyes as he hurried to me, but I refused to melt under his warmth, not with all the suspicions I was filled with.

“What is the secret behind your family?” I demanded.

My blood turned to ice.

“Why do you have so many security guards? Where did those scars on your body come from? What are you hiding from me?”

Seeing his eyes widen before relaxing into resignation already told me what I needed to know. If I had any doubt before that I was overthinking it, his reaction cleared it up.

“What are you hiding from me?” I asked once again but my tone was more mild.

To think that a conversation with Caterina was all I needed to make my boat overfill with so much suspicion that I could no longer control myself.

FLASHBACK

I settled into the comfortable armchair, sipping my tea.

Caterina was seated opposite me in the elegant sitting room. We had spent the past couple of minutes talking about various things.

I decided that this was a good time to ask her about the things I had noticed around the house.

Since Luigi wouldn’t answer my question, hopefully, Caterina would.

I leaned forward, my curiosity piqued and began our conversation.

"Caterina," I said, my voice filled with intrigue, "I’ve noticed something around here that’s caught my attention.”

“Oh? What’s that?” She seemed intrigued.

“Why are there so many security guards here? They’re even more than the number wealthy people usually hire in their own houses.” I let out a small laugh while keeping a close eye on her face.

“Is there any specific reason for it?”

Caterina's gaze flickered for a moment as if weighing her words carefully.

"My dear, security is of utmost importance to the family. We have responsibilities and interests that require protection. It ensures our stability and safeguarding against potential threats."

Just the way she spoke already added to my suspicion. Caterina was naturally a joyful person. She barely spoke so seriously like this. Also, the way her face had shuttered and cleared itself of her previous expressions.

I couldn't help but feel a slight disappointment in her vague response, wanting more concrete details.

“But I’ve been living here for several weeks and nothing has happened that could warrant so many security guards,” I said with skepticism.

Caterina sighed. “Look, I don’t know what else you want to me tell you, Angela. We are a high-profile family. It is expected that we will have a lot of security guards. I don’t understand what answer you’re hoping to hear.”

Caterina stood up to leave the room, but I hurriedly stopped her.
