“Wait!” I yelled, frantic, to get her to stop.

“If you can’t tell me about the security guards, then at least tell me what happened to Dante?” I blurted out.

“What happened to Dante?” Caterina whirled around.

I swallowed. “How did he get all those scars on his body? Knife wounds? Gun wounds? He said he would tell me later, but he hasn’t told me up till now.”

Caterina slumped forward. “If he said he was going to tell you, then he will.”

“You can’t expect me to wait.” I snorted in disbelief and waved my hands around to express my frustration.

I could bypass her not wanting to tell about the surge in the number of their security guards, but there was no way I was going to accept not knowing exactly how Dante had gotten those injuries.

“What exactly are you guys hiding from me?” I pleaded with Caterina, who looked torn between answering me and walking away from me.

“Look, sometimes, it’s better not to know some things.” She took a deep breath.

“Listen, Angela. I really can’t tell you anything, but there’s someone who can. You know who you ought to ask.”

Caterina then turned and left me standing in the middle of the exquisite living room.

I inhaled deeply and turned on my heel.

I already knew what I had to do.

Since no one was going to answer my questions, I would head to the one person who would answer my questions.

I made my way to Dante’s study.

END OF FLASHBACK

**********

I sat across from Dante, my heart pounding with a mixture of anticipation and fear.

The time had come for us to have the conversation I had been dreading, where Dante would reveal the truth about his family.

His eyes met mine, and I could sense the weight of his confession lingering in the air.

"Dante," I began, my voice barely above a whisper.

"There's something I need to know. Something you've been keeping from me."

He took a deep breath, his gaze unwavering.

"Angela, I've been meaning to tell you... My family, the Cortinis, we're involved in something... something that goes beyond the line of morality."

My heart skipped a beat, and I braced myself for what I was about to hear.

"What do you mean, Dante?

He looked down, his voice filled with remorse.

"We’re a mafia family, Angela, involved in organized crime, a world that's dangerous and dark. It's not something I'm proud of, but it's a part of who I am."

The room fell silent as his words hung heavily between us.

My mind raced, trying to process the magnitude of his confession.
