He reached out and gently took my hands in his, his touch sending a surge of warmth through me.

"I understand your fears, Angela. But we can't deny the connection between us, the love we share. Our son deserves to grow up knowing both his parents. I’ve already missed out on three years of his life. I refuse to miss any more years."

Tears welled up in my eyes as conflicting emotions battled within me.

I wanted nothing more than to be with Dante and our son, to create a family together, but the risks were too great.

"Dante, I can't bear the thought of losing either of you," I choked out, my voice breaking.

"I want to protect our son to keep him safe, but it seems like leaving is the only way to do so."

He wrapped his arms around me.

"Angela, I can't lose you either, and I won't let fear tear us apart. We can find a way to keep our family safe, to navigate this dangerous world together."

His words pierced through the walls of my doubt, igniting a flicker of hope within me.

I didn’t want to leave Dante either.

My head and my heart were at war with one another.

Reason told me to stay away from Dante, while my heart told me to stay.

"What do you suggest?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

Dante's unwavering gaze met mine, his words hanging in the air.

"Come and live with us in the house. We will take all the necessary precautions to ensure our son's safety. We have security measures, bodyguards, and the weight of our family name. You won't need to go back to work at the hospital. You can even continue your work here."

A frown creased my forehead as I carefully chose my words, not wanting to touch upon the sensitive subject of Dante's father.

"I don't see the need for me to stay here," I replied.

Dante raised an eyebrow, a touch of amusement in his eyes.

"Have you forgotten that I own the hospital?" he quipped.

"If I say you don't need to work there, then you don't need to."

My lips tightened into a thin line, unimpressed with Dante's attempt to control my autonomy.

"I enjoy working at the hospital," I retorted, my voice firm.

"I take pride in my job as a nurse."

With a quick response, Dante shot back, "Then be a nurse for my family. You're already familiar with our line of work."

Dante's words were unreasonable, but the reminder of the dangers lurking in the shadows of the mafia world made my heart skip a beat, a flicker of fear crossing my face.

Sensing my unease, Dante hugged me tighter.

"It's not usually anything serious," he reassured me, his voice filled with a mixture of concern and determination.

"As a nurse for my family, your salary would be more than what you'd earn at the hospital."

The weight of Dante's eagerness to make me stay tugged at my heart, but it wasn't enough to sway my decision.

I understood the risks and dangers involved in being a part of his world, and as much as I loved him and our son, I couldn't simply abandon my career and the sense of purpose it brought me.
