She grinned and draped the dress over her arm as we continued to peruse the store, trying on various outfits and sharing our opinions on each other's choices.

It was like our own personal fashion show as we laughed and had fun.

After making our purchases after selecting dozen of clothes and accessories from different stores, we decided to take a break and grab a bite to eat at the mall's food court.

We settled down at a cozy table near a window, savoring the aroma of freshly baked pizza and french fries.

As we dug into our meals, our conversation drifted to other topics. J

essi shared stories about her recent trip to the beach while I filled her in on the latest gossip about my fellow nurses from the hospital.

Time flew by as we laughed and enjoyed ourselves before resuming our shopping spree.

As Jessi and I walked through the mall, I couldn't help but notice a slight sadness in her eyes.

It was something I had noticed anytime we went shopping back when we attended university, when we became closer.

"Jessi," I began cautiously, "I know you don’t like talking about it each time I bring it up, but I can’t stand to see you like this each time we hang out. What exactly happened?"

She paused for a moment, a mix of emotions flickering across her face.

I could see a hint of hesitation, as if she were contemplating whether or not to trust me with her secrets.

I listened intently, feeling a surge of empathy for my friend.

I have always admired Jessi's resilience and her ability to find joy even in the face of adversity. I had

"As a child, I always liked to lose myself to my imagination," she continued.

"I would dream of a different world and roleplay as different characters.”

“I think almost every child did that.” I joked, hoping to ease her mood.

She chuckled.

It was rare to see Jessie not being her usual crazy and hyper self.

"But things changed when I turned sixteen," she said, her voice lowering.

"We went through a lot of rough patches, almost losing our home.

I could see how disheartened she was in having to relive the past.

It made me regret asking her about what had happened.

"Because of that period of not having money to even buy a lot of clothes, I decided to get creative and make do with what I was able to make do with," Jessi continued with a hint of a smile slowly appearing on her face.

"I would spend hours at thrift stores and put together unique outfits from second-hand pieces.”

I nodded, now understanding why she would feel melancholic anytime we went shopping.
