Squeezing my hand, Romeo leads me up the steps to my house.
My parents come to the door, and I can’t help but sniffle when I lay eyes on them. It’s obvious that the stress of my father’s predicament has gotten to them over the past few years, which makes me mad as hell.
To my great fortune, they’re welcoming and kind as they usher us into the house.
"Hey there, Dino." Mom tousles my hair. "I’ve been waiting for you."
"You can say that again." Dad shoots me a wink. "It looks like you brought a friend."
"Mom, Dad." I push out a breath. "You know I’ve had a crush on Romeo since I was younger and well, now we’re Daddy and boy. We have an alternative lifestyle that isn’t right for everyone, but I pray you can respect us for who we are and understand that we both consent to this."
"He’s in his sixties, Dino!" Mom hollers.
Dino smiles as he shakes her hand. "Your son makes me feel twenty again."
"Oh God." Mom rolls her eyes.
Dad turns to Mom. "Listen to your damn son, Angelica. He’s liked Romeo Luciano since the dawn of time—years of trying to talk him out of it hasn’t worked."
"That’s right, Dad." I puff out my chest. "Romeo is my Daddy whether you like it or not."
Dad thrusts his arm around Romeo’s shoulders. "You’re about my age, so I assume you suffer some of the same health problems as I do. I have some great little blue pills you could try if you’re having trouble. I’d never want to see someone in my son’s life not satisfy his every need."
Romeo roars out a laugh, slamming Dad’s back with his mighty fist, making Dad cough and hiccup. "I haven’t needed a little blue erectile dysfunction pill since Dino and I became intimate. When I was sexually active with my wife, well—you know how that was! I was swallowing those suckers like Skittles!"
Everyone roars with laughter, even Mom, which surprises me.
"Isn’t that a little sexist?" I wonder.
Mom crackles. "It’s a two-way street. If you think I don't need my horny pills before banging your father, you’re out of your mind."
Romeo and l leave my parents to their own devices, which is nice.
I’m glad that my Dad’s dislike of me dating a man forty years older than me is water under the bridge.
