Instead, the Mediterranean wind is blowing against my cheeks, sending goosebumps coursing across my skin, and making me shiver.

"Damn, Romeo!" I pick up a handful of sand, then throw it into the wind. "This wind’s gonna blow my ass away before the Riccardis show up. Yeah, this plan sucks!"

Speak of the devil—the next gust of wind comes, and it swoops me off my feet.

I holler out to my maker, flailing at least ten feet in the air, before crashing to the ground in a clump.

"Jesus Christ," I groan, picking myself up and dusting my kneecaps off. "What am I? A kite?"

Who knew the wind in Italy was so powerful?

I shake sand out of my hair, I try to focus on the plan at hand.

The Riccardis are presumably watching this beach to attack me.

I’m not with the others.

They think they can easily pick me off if Romeo isn’t around.

Not. So. Fast.

That’s the beauty of being associated with the Lucianos.

No matter what the Riccardis think, Romeo always stands by me.

Even when I seem to be alone, I’m not.

The Riccardis would be wise to ignore me.

I sit on a piece of driftwood, then stare at the sea.

The blue water stretches out before me, a vast expanse of turquoise and azure.

The water is crystal clear, allowing me to see the rocks and coral beneath the waves.

Salty air fills my lungs as I inhale deeply, taking in the scent and the surrounding vegetation.

The sun beats down on me, warming my skin and flooding me with a sense of anticipation.

I tap my foot impatiently on the ground. "Where are they? They’re supposed to be abducting me by now."

A bug drifts through the air, landing in my hair.

To my surprise, it doesn’t move when I try to tug it out.

No matter how hard I yank it, its claws are stuck to my hair roots.

"Jesus!" I snap, getting annoyed now. "This bug needs to… bugger off."

Suddenly, an electric jolt zaps me.

I holler out something unintelligible, then rise to my feet.

Something’s controlling my every step.

An invisible force forces me to put one foot in front of the other.

Though I try to stay on the shore, I’m powerless to resist the force that tugs me toward the ocean.
