"There’s a first time for everything," I say.

Marcello, Lazaro, and Santino unpack pink teacups and pour imaginary tea for the Riccardis.

The imaginary tea party is off to a great start.

* * *

One hour later, we’re all sipping tea and opening up.

"It hurt me when you killed Paulo," Luigi says. "It wasn’t nice."

"Paulo was in our way," I return.

"Yeah, but he wasn’t even involved in the Mafia biz."

That’s when Giuseppe pulls out a gun.

He aims it at my chest. "This has gone on for long enough."

Giuseppe fires the gun.

Bang.

The bullet slams into my chest, shooting me backward.

I scream, flipping upside down, my jet pack threatening to slip off.

Dino gets so scared the inserter pops out of his ass. "Daddy!"

Amadeo roars as he lunges toward Giuseppe. "No, you don’t."

My family and friends grab each of the Riccardi brothers.

They tie them up, then fly them to Nonna and Nonno’s helicopter.

"I’m glad Nonna and Nonno were following us," Vincenzo says.

Everyone helps me into the chopper, where I cough up blood as I clutch my chest.

Dino thrusts his arms around me. "Oh, my God. Please tell me you’re all right.

I hold Dino’s hand tight. "If I don't make it—bahahaha, just kidding. I ain’t gonna die on you. I’m strong."

"Like Hulk." Dino squeezes me tight.

"Let’s feed these bastards to sharks like we swore we’d do."

Luigi, Petrie, and Giuseppe scream as Nonno flies them toward a shark-infested spot in the Mediterranean.

They swing from the helicopter, their bodies swaying and smacking into each other like rocks on string.

Movement flickers under the murky blue, attesting to the beasts that lurk deep.

Dino grips my hand. "I see sharks."

I tug a tiny shark toy out of my suit coat pocket and slide it in Dino’s palm. "I brought this for you to play with."

Dino sniffles as he holds me. "I love it."
