Unable to move, they both lay there in each other’s arms, Dereck’s rapid breath slowing as the seconds go by. He was drifting off to sleep again when the loud ringing of his phone jolted him from bed.

“Shit,” he said. “I have to go.”

“Work?” Alina asked, hoping it was nothing else.

“Yes.” He kissed her on the lips before he leaped out of bed, jumping into his pants. “I hate to leave like this but if I don’t leave now, I will be late.”

Alina stretched her lips. “Fine. I will excuse you this time.”

Dereck fastened the last button on his shirt and walked over to Alina, leaning over her to shower her with kisses. Alina held on behind his neck and tried to pull him down on top of her, but Dereck was too strong. He maintained his standing position, even though his body wanted to betray him. Then he unlatched Alina’s hand from behind his neck, gave her one final kiss, and fled.

Alina remained in bed for about an hour after Dereck left before she wrapped her robe around her and crawled to the sitting. Then she dialed a number on her phone and waited for the person to answer.

“You’ve reached the chief of medicine’s office. How may I help you?”

Alina took a deep breath. “I would like to speak to the chief of medicine please,” she told the receptionist.

“He’s unable to take your call right now,” the elderly woman announced. “May I take a message?”

Alina clung to the phone and twirled the cord. “This is the person who made the complaint against Dr. Johnson. I would like to recant my complaint. I realize now that it was all a misunderstanding. I’m sorry for any trouble I may have caused.”

The elderly woman on the other end spoke loudly. “If you wish to recant, you have to write an official letter to the chief of medicine.”

Alina froze. She had hoped that she could simply speak to the chief of medicine to recant, but it did make sense that she had to write a letter since it was a letter that started this mess in the first place.

“Okay,” she said. “I will write the letter and deliver it myself today.” Then she said. “I wish to end this misunderstanding as soon as possible.”

Alina did exactlywhat she said she would. She wrote the letter and delivered it to the hospital herself. As she walked into the office, the elderly woman looked up at her, peeping behind her glasses.

“Hello,” Alina said. “I called earlier regarding the letter about Dr. Johnson.”

“Of course,” the woman said, jumping to recognition.

Alina dipped in her bag and took out the letter. “This is all I need to do, right? And the issue would be dropped.”

“Yes dear,” the woman said, taking the letter with a wavering hand.

“Again, I’m really sorry for the trouble,” Alina apologized with her head hung low.

“These things happen, dear.” Then she added. “Dr. Johnson would be pleased with the outcome. I will give him the news.”

“Thank you,” Alina said and walked out the door. As she did so, the old woman watched her with fixed eyes.

She had reached the lobby when someone called her name from behind.

“Alina. What brings you to here?”

Alina looked into Dereck’s gray eyes, her hand gripping tighter to the strap of her bag. “Bailey asked me to drop something off for her.”

Dereck had a cheerful demeanor. “If you give it to me, I will make sure her doctor gets it.”

Alina looked in the direction of Bailey’s doctor’s office. A woman walked in and closed the door behind her. “It’s ok. I already gave it to him and was on my way out.”

Dereck glared at her. “Without saying hello to me.”

“Well,” Alina looked at him, her eyes fluttering. “I know how busy you are so I didn’t want to disturb you.”
