Dereck stopped at a Chinese restaurant and brought Alina, her favorite, sweet and sour chicken with pork fried rice, and she was happy that he allowed her to eat in peace when they arrived in his room.

“Hey,” Dereck said, handing her a fortune cookie. Alina took it and cracked it open, staring at the words inside. “This is for you.”

“What does it say?” Dereck kept his distance from her, offering her the bed while he sat on the only other furniture in the room.

“Your life is about to change,” Alina read out loud as if she needed the fortune cookie to tell her that.

“You spoke to Taylor?” Dereck kept his head low but drummed his fingers on his pant leg.

“Yes. I did.” She breathed out hard. “Look Dereck, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you.”

Dereck chuckled. “You don’t have to apologize, Alina. I should have noticed. If I were a good boyfriend, I would have realized. The signals were all there. Plus, you tried telling me several times. I was too busy or too consumed with myself to listen.”

Alina stretched her lip and clasp her hand together. “I could have tried harder.”

“No,” Dereck interjected. “This isn’t your fault. It is mine. Never blame yourself for that.” Alina noticed when he swallowed hard. “Have you thought about what you want to do? About the baby, I mean.”

“I’m keeping it,” she said sharply. “I want this baby Dereck. And I understand if you don’t. I did not plan this and we never even spoke about it, so I’m willing to take care of this child on my own.”

“Don’t be silly Alina.” Dereck leaned forward, resting his elbows on his lap. “Of course, I want to be part of this child’s life. And yours, if you would let me.” Alina wanted to be strong, but when Dereck looked at her with such intensities in his eyes, she always faltered. “I still love you, Alina. And I know you still love me, too.”

“Of course, I still love you, Dereck. But love is not everything. And I have someone else to think about now. It’s not only me.” She was lying down on the bed with her upper body propped up against the headboard.

“I understand that,” Dereck said, his eyes looking glossy. “And I will do everything I can to change. I promise to be more attentive and be there for you and the baby.”

Alina grabbed one pillow and held it against her chest. “You say that now, but I don’t think you can put me before your work and I don’t want to ask you to do that.”

“You don’t have to,” Dereck said. “I’m telling you, that is what I will do from now on.”

Alina shook her head. “We both know what the life of a doctor is like. You can’t penalize your patients for me. I won’t let you.” Then she breathed out hard. “Plus, your work is not the only reason I broke up with you.” She paused. “I spoke to Amanda. She told me what has been going on between you two.”

Although Alina didn’t specify what she and the other woman spoke about, it was obvious in her tone.

Dereck’s posture became ridged right before going towards Alina, remaining low on the bed but within reach. “I don’t know what Amanda told you, but I swear nothing happened between me and that woman.” There was an intensity in his voice, and Alina knew he was telling her the truth. “Dina brought Amanda to dinner once after asking for quality time and I met her again at the bar the night of Martin’s celebration. That was it. At work, I keep it professional. I promise Alina, I never cheated on you.”

Alina took a moment to digest everything Dereck said. “But this changes nothing. I can’t go back with you, Dereck. You only came after me when you found out I was pregnant. If Taylor hadn’t told you, you would have been in New York right now, living your life.”

Dereck rubbed the back of his head. “That doesn’t change the way I feel about you.”

“But it changes the way I feel about you.” She took a deep breath. “Dereck, I don’t want to be with a man who only fights for me when he learns I’m carrying his child. I want a man who would fight for me because he loves me.”

Dereck edged closer. “But I love you, Alina.”

She shook her head. “Not enough for you to drive across the state.”

The two remained silent for a while. “I’ve really messed up, haven’t I?” Dereck sighed. “When you came to me in Connecticut, I promised you things would get better, but it seems I’ve only made it worse. You’ve lost your faith in me and I’ve hurt you over and over again.” He shook his head. “I just don’t know what I should do.”

Seeing the pain in his eyes was causing Alina’s heart to ache. She reached out to Dereck and stroked his hand gently and the minute she did, a surge took over her body. Alina fought hard to ignore it. “There is nothing you can do.”

Dereck raised his head from where he covered it between the sheets, and Alina visibly shivered. The way he looked at her was unbearable.

His hands trailed up her leg then, his fingertips tapping along. Alina knew she should resist, but his touch was electrifying and she wanted it more than anything at that point. She shifted her body, wiggling, so she slid closer to Dereck. Right before she covered his lips, Alina declared, “This changes nothing.”

Dereck didn’t seem to care. He wrapped her in his arms and intensified their kiss, swelling her lips. Alina clung to his back as Dereck’s hand found its way under her dress. Before she knew it, Dereck had slid aside her underwear, leaving her folds bare under his touch.

Alina moaned and gripped Dereck even tighter. When two fingers slid inside her, she couldn’t hold back any longer. Alina tugged at his clothing, urging him to free himself. Dereck maintained his unrelenting act until he felt her convulse around his fingers.

Dereck’s finger was soaked with Alina’s moisture, but there was still passion in her eyes. “Do you want me?” he asked.
