The restaurant receptionist bypassed this and turned to a door leading outdoors. The outside setting was even more spectacular than the inside. The area was uncovered and a thick glass separated them from the city. There weren’t many tables, which made it perfect for a more private setting.
Dereck helped Alina to her seat as she awed at the miniature fireside. A chilled bottle of wine was already waiting at their table and when the woman reached for her glass Alina informed her, “No wine for me, please.”
That’s when Dereck spoke up. “Alina, it’s okay. I specially ordered non-alcoholic.”
Alina smiled as the woman poured their drinks and left. “You are really sweet, you know that?” There was a warm feeling in her heart that words could not convey. “I’m so lucky to have you in my life.”
“I think I’m the lucky one,” Dereck said and raised his glass to her. Alina gave the glass a delicate nudge with hers and sipped the bubbly liquid.
“This place is beautiful. How did you find it?” She observed her surrounding. “I didn’t even know about it.”
“You deserve the best, so I did a little research.” He sported a proud smile. “This place is high class, I mean superstars and elites.”
Alina leaned forward, panic in her widened eyes. When she spoke, her voice was hushed. “Dereck, can you even afford this place?” She tossed the napkin on the table. “Come on, let’s get out of here before the waitress comes back.”
Dereck simply laughed and held her hand, forcing her back to a seated position. “Don’t worry, I have it all covered. My parents own multiple five-star restaurants, remember?”
Alina still glared around her. “I don’t want you using your parents’ money on me.”
“I’m not,” Dereck said firmly. “I make a decent enough salary as a doctor to treat my girlfriend to a delightful meal.” He patted her hand. “So just relax, okay? I’ve got this covered.”
Alina seemed to relax a little then, but her smile remained uneasy.
“So,” Dereck focused on Alina. “How far along are you?”
That seemed to put a smile on her face. Alina put a tender hand to her stomach. “About two months. It must have happened when I visited you in Connecticut. I was so emotional back then, I put little effort into maintaining my pills.”
“I’m glad you didn’t.” Dereck held her hand. “Alina, I’m looking forward to a life together, the three of us.”
A choked sound escaped her. “Really?” Her eyes were wide. “I was worried that you would not have been pleased. With that job offer and all that.”
Dereck’s expression altered, and he became more serious. “Let’s not talk about that tonight. Tonight, I just want to concentrate on us.”
Alina smiled and ended the conversation.
In addition to the wine, Dereck had preordered their meal, and it thrilled Alina she did not have to wait long for her food to be prepared. Alina had grilled seafood served with asparagus and a side salad. It was unbelievably well prepared and juicy and worth the lump sum of money she knew Dereck had to pay for it. He chose the steak for himself and it came with a serving of glazed carrots which Alina also devoured.
Dereck limited his preorder to only the meal, so the waitress brought the dessert menu. “I think I want the cayenne chocolate with goat cheese buttercream.” Then she closed the menu. “It’s my mother’s favorite.”
“Well, in that case, we’ll have three,” he told the waitress. “One to go.”
After the waitress left Alina told Dereck, “At this rate, my mother won’t let you leave Maryland.”
Dereck chuckled. “As long as you’re by my side.”
Alone on the terrace, Alina felt the urge to give in to her sexual desires. She slipped off her shoes and stretch her foot underneath the table.
