His sister turned around and her eyes locked with Alina’s. “Yes, she’s here.”

“Great.” Dereck breathed out hard. “I hired a car for Alina. I want you to come with her.”

Dina eyed her brother’s girlfriend again, her nose pushed upward and her eyes narrowed. “No way. I’ll find my own way there.”

“Why not?” Dereck asked, his voice concerned.

Dina had her faults, but Alina admired her honesty. “I had a tough day and the last thing I want to do is act courteously on the ride over. I prefer to come by myself.”

Dereck paused. “Dina. I don’t ask you for much, but I’m asking you for this. Please ride in the car with Alina.”

His sister took a moment to consider her brother’s request and right before she spoke, her features softened. “Fine.” Dina finally said. “But if anything happens, remember you made me.”

Dereck didn’t sound bothered by his sister. “Thank you, Dina. I knew I could count on you.”

“Yea, yea, yea,” she said before ending the call. Then she turned to Alina, who was standing nearby. “Dereck wants us to travel together. Give me a few minutes to get changed.”

Alina nodded her head, and Dina went inside her room. It didn’t take her long to reemerge, looking as if she had been getting dressed for hours.

Dina wore a short bodycon dress and six-inch heeled sandals which didn’t obstruct her from giving the perfect runway walk. Her hair was still held together in a low ponytail, with curls draping her back, but it was freshly slicked. Extravagant bangles dangled on her wrist and matched the pair of gold hooped earrings. Alina never noticed multiple piercings in the woman’s ears, but her ears were lined with gold studs.

Walking up to Alina, who waited on her, Dina draped her purse on her shoulders. “Ready?”

Alina nodded her head and then froze, unsure whether she should address the issue. In her mind, she voted for it. As a woman, it would be appreciated if another woman did that for her.

“Your tag…It’s uh,” Alina began before reaching up and pulling out the price tag from the other woman’s dress. Dina was dressed in such a hurry, and she must have forgotten to remove it.

At first, when Alina neared her, Dina looked appalled, but after realizing what was happening, she adjusted her expression. “Thank you,” she said, a little stiff. “My assistant bought it for me today for the event.” Dina was even shocked at herself. She did not know why she felt the need to explain herself to Alina.

“It’s lovely,” Alina responded with a half-smile.

Before the women left the apartment, Dina gave an awkward nod and lengthened her body.

The car ride was even more awkward than the women’s hallway conversation. No one spoke and both women sat on opposite ends of the back seat, keeping their eyes out of their window, no doubt wishing the venue was nearer.

Dina sighed multiple times, but Alina’s first one came when traffic stilled on the highway. “What’s going on?” she asked the driver.

“I think there’s an accident up front,” the driver said without turning around.

“Great,” Dina blurted. “Now I’m trapped here.”

Alina felt as if she was on the receiving end of Dina’s aggression. “This isn’t what I wanted either, you know.”

Dina turned to face Alina. “Really?” She opened her eyes. “Isn’t entrapping my brother with a child what you wanted? Now he will never leave you.”

Alina made a noise coming from her chest. She was frustrated and tired. It seemed as if the more she tried to be civil with Dina, the more she faced rejection. She was done with it and was very animated with her speech. “You are so infuriating. Do you think you and your brother are God’s gift to the earth and the rest of us are just lucky to even be in your presence?” She shook her head. “You won’t approve of any woman for your brother because no one will ever be good enough.” Alina didn’t think before she spat out her last sentence. “No wonder you’re single.”

Dina turned to Alina; her eyes gray but executing fiery red energy. “I don’t have a man because I don’t resort to entrapment. I’m too busy running a multi-million-dollar business. But when I do, he won’t be in the same class as you…”

Dina was still in the middle of her ranting when she noticed Alina’s hand go to her stomach as a pained expression took over her face. When Dina noticed the soiled seat, she knew exactly what was happening.

‘No, no, no!” Dina blurted, her hand waving in the air. “You cannot have this baby here. Not now. Hold it in,” she demanded. Her eyes were wide, and she spoke extremely loudly, gaining the attention of the driver. The driver twisted to eye them in the back seat but remained silent.

Alina didn’t mean to scream, but at the same time she spoke, a contraction came and the force of it came through her voice. “How about you tell this freaking baby it can’t come into the world yet?” She was clutching the seat with her back against the door, knuckles getting white.

Dina leaned over, and with the most soothing voice she could muster, she said, “Baby. Why don’t you do aunty a favor and stay in there just for a little longer?” She took two fingers and stroked Alina’s huge swelling belly but jumped back when she felt movement.

If Alina wasn’t in pain, she would have laughed. It was just funny seeing a woman who was usually in control of everything so flustered.
