I stop short when I open the door to my office to find Charlee sitting on my couch, hands folded on top of her crossed legs, her thick frames bordering those huge brown eyes of hers. She shifts them down her nose and raises her brows at me, a tiny little smirk playing on her ruby red lips.

“Well, Miss Thompson? Were you a bad girl or a good girl last night?”

CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO

Avery

“Happy fucking hump day, buddy. Did you see how much money we already made this week?”

Wyatt slaps down his laptop, showing me the stocks, his cursor circling over Galvin Pharmaceuticals. I smile at the little arrow that’s pointing up toward the sky beside all those points. Company shares went public on Monday morning, and fifty hours later, Jones & Beck Investments has already raked in three-point-seven million dollars. This is, by far, going to prove to be one of our biggest deals ever.

I already had an ecstatic Troy Galvin on the phone twice this week, offering me the use of his private villa in France and the beachfront one in Hawaii.

“It’s looking prettier and prettier by the hour,” I observe.

Wyatt slumps down in the chair across from me. “When we started this company, did you ever think we’d be here? I mean, I knew we’d make money. I figured we’d make enough to live comfortably here in Toronto, buy a nice house, not really worry about anything. But I never imagined we’d be here. And in a matter of years. Shit, we aren’t even thirty yet.” He runs his fingers through the blond mess on top of his head. “I honestly don’t even know what to do with all the money I make.”

“You sound like a rich snob. No wonder you have so much trouble nailing down a girl.”

“I have no trouble nailing down a girl. I just don’t want to nail down a girl. All they want is my money. Rather keep doing what I’m doing.”

“Sticking your dick in anything warm and wet and with a nice set of tits and then never seeing them again?”

“Don’t forget a nice, juicy ass.” He leans forward, swiping my phone off my desk. “And you’re one to talk. Up until a month ago you were doing the same fucking thing. Now…” He unlocks my phone. I change my password every week and the fucker guesses it every time within the first three tries. He flashes me the screen, showing me the picture I’d been staring at the last time it was opened, as if he knew. “Now you just sit here and stare at this like a fucking pussy.”

I pluck my phone out of his hand, taking one last look at the picture of Claire on my lap, her head thrown back while she laughs wildly, Vivi showering her in kisses at the park. I clear my throat when I catch myself smiling and shove my phone in my desk drawer.

Wyatt’s brows rise slowly as he looks me over. His elbows hit the desk as he leans toward me. “Unless you’re still sticking your dick in something warm and wet, with a nice set of tits and a juicy ass?”

“A gentleman doesn’t tell.” I lean back in my chair, lacing my fingers behind my head.

“Good thing you’re not a gentleman.” He shakes his head. “You fucked Claire. I can’t believe it. Spill. How was she? As feisty in bed as she is all day long?”

I’m not sure feisty covers it, and I think the expression I’m wearing says as much.

A sly, crooked grin slips up Wyatt’s face. “Knew she’d be wild.” He plucks my apple off the desk and takes a big, juicy bite, not looking the least bit apologetic.

I hesitate, mulling over my next words. They slip from my mouth before I have the chance to decide whether or not I even want to say them.

“She snuck out in the middle of the night.”

He slaps a hand over his mouth, covering his choking cough. “She snuck out?”

“She sure as shit did.”

I’d rather not get into detail about the momentary rage that rolled through me when I woke up in the middle of the night to an empty bed. I had half a mind to go down to her apartment, guns blazing, demanding to know what the hell was up before dragging her back to bed with me.

Luckily, I rarely ever act on impulse, and the five minutes I took to cool my jets reminded me that this was all new to her, sleeping with someone without any type of relationship status, and that she was probably freaking out a bit.

I gave her the space she clearly needed, but I’ve only got the one free pass up my sleeve.

“You pissed about that?” Wyatt asks, tossing the apple core in the trash. “Her sneaking out?”

I shrug noncommittally. “I know what she’s like. She’s freaked out and afraid of commitment right now. Can’t really hold it against her, I guess, but we talked this morning, so I doubt she’ll do it again. I think she thought it was what I wanted, too.”

“Normally it would be what you wanted,” he points out, relaxing back in his chair. He kicks his feet up on my desk, because he’s way too comfortable here.
