I pursed my lips. “Sort of.”

Enzo’s eyes opened wide. “Did anyone see you?”

“First of all, she was a friend and nothing happened. And I have no idea if anyone saw me. I haven’t seen it all over Instagram, so I’m guessing I’m fine.”

“You have to be careful.”

“No lectures today. Okay?”

“Fine. No lectures. The reason I’m here is that you have a contract to sign,” Enzo said, pulling it from his briefcase.

“Did I get everything I wanted?”

“You could have had more if you hadn’t tried to kill Carlton. Leonardo is furious with you.”

“That asshole deserved it,” I said, looking over the papers.

“Your lawyer said everything is in order; you just need to sign it.”

Everything looked fine. Years ago, I’d made it a rule to always read the contracts myself. Sometimes they tried to slip things in that even a lawyer or agent could miss. “Why won’t they commit to more than one year?” I asked, signing the contract anyway.

Enzo cleared his throat uncomfortably. “Do you want me to be honest?” he said, sitting down at my kitchen island.

“I pay you to be honest with me and lie to everyone else.”

Enzo steepled his hands on the table. “It’s the Perez woman.”

“You’re kidding me,” I said with a heavy sigh.

“I talked to a few people, and it seems the Russo brass are a little worried about her. In their defense, they don’t know what the two of you talk about in the heat of passion. Maybe you’re telling her team secrets. Who knows?” Enzo said, throwing his arms up in the air. “I can’t see why they’re complaining. Since the two of you got together, they profited with increased merchandise sales, let alone the exposure. But that’s business, I suppose.”

I watched Enzo closely. The small man wasn’t making eye contact with me. “What else, Enzo?”

Enzo focused on the wood notches on the butcher-block top of my island. “They aren’t sure they want you for more than one year.”

“I see. So not only have I done everything they wanted, like getting in better shape, being Riedl’s servant, I’m still being tossed?”

“They say you haven’t performed to their expectations, but because of the exposure you brought to the team this year, they want to keep you on for next year and see how things go. So maybe the Perez woman was a blessing, after all.”

“Her name is Luna.”

“Yes, yes, Luna.”

“That’s interesting. So if I perform well and continue to make them money, they may keep me around and string me along for another year. And maybe another after that? Until they tire of me, or I’m not profitable enough?”

“Look at it this way, if it doesn’t work out, she can support you.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“The woman is worth a small fortune. Well, a large fortune. Do you have any idea what the family is worth? This contract you just signed? Multiply that by a hundred, that’s what she is worth. Her brother is probably worth a little more.”

“Is that so?”

“I see that got your full attention.”
