“True.”

It was getting late, and jet lag was beginning to sneak up on me too. We finished up the dishes, and I said good night and trudged up to the small apartment. Devin was asleep, sprawled across the small bed. He hadn’t even bothered to change out of his jeans and Russo shirt. I changed into the Perez shirt and shorts I wore as pajamas and walked over to the bed. The hardwood floors creaked beneath my feet.

“Devin,” I whispered, touching his arm.

He muttered something.

“Move over a bit.”

He grunted before turning onto his side, leaving just enough room for me to crawl into bed. I chuckled at the circumstances I found myself in. Never once had I thought I’d have a man in this little apartment, and here I was with the sexiest and most uncontrollable man I could get my hands on.

ChapterThirteen

Luna

The next morning I woke up alone. It was still early, the sun just beginning to rise. I tiptoed into the hallway and listened for any sounds, but nothing came from Elizabeth’s apartment next door or Cecilia’s suite downstairs. I peeked into the kitchen and found it empty. As I walked down the long corridor to the living room, the front door swung open.

Devin entered and swept into the kitchen. He was perspiring heavily, his Russo shirt drenched in sweat.

“Go for a run?” I asked, following him.

He poured himself a glass of water, drinking it all at once. “Yep,” he said, setting the glass down on the kitchen table. “I was up at five with a lot of energy. Instead of waking you up, I thought I’d get some exercise of a different kind.”

“How thoughtful of you,” I teased.

“Now I need a shower,” he said, peeling off his shirt and casting it aside. On the kitchen floor! I hated his sloppiness.

“I’m impressed you put in all that hard work this morning,” I said. I’d spent several hours putting a fitness regimen together for him—something he’d asked me to do. But when he scoffed at it, I told him I wasn’t helping him anymore. But then running had captured his attention, so he was taking fitness a little more seriously, at least until he got bored again.

“Care to join me for that shower?” he asked, grabbing a towel.

“While I’d like to, have you seen the size of that shower?”

“Until next time,” he said as he shed the last of his clothes.

Cecilia insisted on making an elaborate breakfast of bacon, eggs Benedict, and pancakes. I watched Devin eat everything in sight, smothering his pancakes in both butter and syrup until they were swimming. So much for that morning run.

“What are your plans for this morning?” Elizabeth asked.

“I thought I’d show Devin around Montreal. Would you like to come?”

“I couldn’t get the day off work if I wanted to. But why don’t you take my car?” Elizabeth suggested. “I take the Metro to work anyway.”

“We couldn’t possibly do that,” I said. I was afraid of what Devin might do to the car.

“I insist.”

I reluctantly agreed, not wanting to offend my friend. And if Devin did destroy her car, I’d make him buy her another, much nicer one.

“What a hunk of shit,” Devin said, climbing into the car an hour later. I settled into the passenger seat as Devin started the engine. It may have been a little old and pedestrian for Devin, but Elizabeth kept it in immaculate shape.

“She doesn’t have a lot of extra money,” I said with irritation. “And quite frankly, I’d prefer to drive. I know how hard you can be on cars.”

“I’m going to drive,” he said, putting the car in gear.

He couldn’t stand that it was an automatic, but he got over it. From the passenger seat, I acted as navigation. Our first stop was Old Montreal. We walked down the narrow streets and I could see how uninterested Devin was. He wasn’t into sightseeing. In France, he complained about a few days in Paris so I could see the Eiffel Tower. In Venice, he was more interested in the clubs than St. Mark’s Square, and in Greece, the Acropolis was just another “old stone building.” The only attraction he found remotely attractive were the Spanish bullfights, the one thing I had no desire to see. I’d hoped that the charm of the city and the place it held in my life would spark his interest, but no.
