“Too late,” I said, grabbing his hand. We weaved through the crowd toward the bar. I scanned the faces for Blake while Devin ordered some drinks.

“Where are you from?” the bartender asked Devin.

Devin looked at him, his face expressionless. I bit my lip, afraid of what would escape his mouth.

“Well, I’m from fucking China. Now give me a goddamn fucking beer, and keep them coming. If I have to listen to this shit all night, I may as well get as boozed up as possible.”

I groaned. It was going to be a long night.

Devin parked himself on a barstool until Blake found us. He gave Devin one look and chuckled to himself.

“Flynn, so glad you could make it.”

Devin smiled sarcastically.

“Do you mind if I steal your girlfriend for a moment? I’m going to show her how to dance the Texas way.”

“Be my guest.”

“Chuck, keep my friend Devin happy over here,” he said to the bartender before taking my hand and leading me out onto the dance floor.

“Great place you have,” I said.

“It’s one of my fun side projects.” He paused for a moment. “I didn’t actually expect Flynn to come tonight.”

“Are you disappointed?”

“Only a little. But he’ll get himself nice and drunk by his lonesome, so I won’t have to worry about him.”

We danced for nearly an hour. He showed me all the new steps, and I watched intently, trying to learn every one of them. He even found me a cowboy hat so I would fit right in. I laughed at my terrible coordination as I attempted to keep up with Blake. I was having an amazing time despite the fact that Devin was getting more and more intoxicated. He’d parked himself at the bar and had one drink after another as he chatted with the bartender.

“I’d like you to meet someone,” Blake said, taking my hand and leading me to a VIP section I hadn’t noticed. There were some NFL players that Blake seemed well acquainted with, but he was more interested in introducing me to a beautiful woman in her thirties. I found myself momentarily jealous.

“Luna, this is my sister, Helen Watters.”

“Oh! Hello,” I said with relief. Then I checked myself. Why relief?

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Luna. Blake is always talking about you,” the woman said with a laugh. Now that I knew they were related, I realized she had the same captivating blue eyes as her brother.

“It’s nice to meet you.”

“My brother tells me he is going to risk life and limb with your team next year.”

“It looks that way,” I said with a smile. The contract wasn’t signed yet, but if Blake had told his sister, he must really be serious.

“How do you like Dallas?”

“It’s very nice. My boyfriend and I haven’t had much time on our own, but perhaps tomorrow we’ll get a chance to tour the city.”

“Boyfriend?” Helen said with some confusion. She shot her brother a look, but Blake didn’t meet her gaze. “I didn’t know you had a boyfriend.”

“Devin and I have been together since January.”

“Yes, Mr. Flynn is a coworker of mine,” Blake said with a chuckle. “Not a very good one, but that’s the way racing goes.”

Helen nodded knowingly. “I see now. One word of advice, Luna, my brother is a risk-taker, and he hates to lose.”

“I’m beginning to learn that.”
