I set my phone down. I really was happy for Natalie. She deserved a good guy and a stable life. But now I had a mission. I grabbed my phone again and fired off a text to Enzo.

Call me immediately. This is important!!!

Five seconds later, my phone rang.

“What’s the emergency?” Enzo asked.

“I need you to find me a private investigator. I’ve heard from my parents that someone has been poking around. I need to find out who that is.”

“Who do you think is behind it?”

“Probably fucking Carlton, trying to break me and Luna up. And I need to put a stop to this before he causes trouble.”

“I know a few guys.”

“Great. Send along their names. I’ll talk to them.”

“I could do it for you.”

I thought about that for less than a second. Nope. The less Enzo knew, the better. “I’ll do it myself. I’m going to keep close tabs on this person, so no need to get you involved.”

“All right. I’ll find you a few people.”

I put my phone away and stared out the hotel room window. There was one way to end this: send Carlton into a cement barrier in his hometown, a fitting way to send him off. But I wasn’t ruthless like that. I wished I were.

ChapterTwenty

Luna

Rafe and Devin avenged themselves in Dallas. Devin finished a very respectable fifth and Rafe seventh, though Pedro was still floundering. I felt less bad about the all-but-signed deal with Blake. The Perez team had begun to iron out the kinks that had plagued them since their first race. With the influx of money from various sponsors, the engines were improved, and some of the best mechanics were hired. The Perez team was finally coming together and mounting a challenge to the top teams.

With two of the North American races completed, the racing season had now moved to Europe for the rest of the summer. It was a time of rumors and speculation, as many drivers contemplated where they would drive the following year. Devin signed on for another year with Russo, although I sensed that his loyalty to his team had begun to wane. We rarely spoke about those matters, only when they bothered him to the point of ruining his mood.

Like Montreal and Dallas, the races in France and Britain were only one week apart. With races so close together, there was a massive struggle to pack up teams and move them on to the next location as quickly as possible. There was always strain in June and July, two very busy months. There wasn’t a chance to breathe until the race in Britain was over.

We spent a few days at our family flat in London after the race. My friend Jess still used the place as a homebase when she wasn’t following leads for the gossip rags she freelanced for, and I’d been looking forward to hanging out with her. It had been too long.

We got our chance to catch up the day after the race. Devin had some sponsorship duties to attend to. There was an autograph session followed by a ride around the Caldwell racing circuit with a lucky contest winner. Rafe had forbidden me to tag along with Devin. He’d made it clear that they were Devin’s sponsors and not ours.

“Can I ask you some really personal questions?” I said as we wandered into our first boutique of the day.

“It depends how personal they are,” Jess said. “But I’ll probably answer them anyway.”

“It’s about sex.”

Jess threw back her head and laughed. “I’m all ears.”

“How important is sex to a relationship?”

“It’s essential. If the sex sucks, the relationship is doomed to fail.”

“How do you know your partner is being satisfied?”

Jess looked at me and abandoned the clothing racks. “You aren’t faking, are you?”

“Oh no,” I said vehemently. “Devin’s great. That’s not the problem. I just wonder if I’m great.”

Jess resumed thumbing through the rack. “Believe me, all you have to do is be there.”
