“I thought so. There are eight guys on the planet who hate blow jobs, and Devin isn’t one of them.”

“I didn’t think I could do it, but you get so into it. And you’re right, it does lead to great things.”

“And he didn’t mind having you in control?”

“I don’t know. Jess, he’s the type of guy who has to be in charge. No matter what it is in life, he has to be in control, and it was nice to be able to call the shots for once.”

“You have so much to learn,” Jess said in her schoolteacher voice. “It’s so nice that for once in our lives, we both are having sex on a regular basis.”

I laughed. “It’s not just the sex, though. I really love him, Jess.”

“I know.”

She motioned to her scrambled eggs, but I shook my head.

“Whenever we’re apart all I do is think about him. And when we make love, I can’t wait until we do it again. He’s the man I want to spend the rest of my life with. I don’t care that he’s slept with all those other women because he’s mine now.”

She considered that. “Don’t smother him, Luna.”

“I won’t.”

“He’s got you wrapped around his finger, doesn’t he?”

“If he does, I don’t care.”

Jess gave me a hard stare. “This relationship is still new; the infatuation could wear off. And I’m not saying this to be an asshole. I just want you to know all the facts.”

“It won’t wear off.”

Jess smirked. “You say that now, but what about a year from now?”

I sighed. Jess could be the worst downer. “What I know is that my heart aches for him. Have you ever loved a man so much that every moment he’s away you can’t wait for him to come back? There are times when he leaves and I count down the minutes until he returns. When we’re together, the world seems to disappear as if we’re the only ones who exist. There are times I’ll just stare at him and wonder why he’s with me, and I think how empty my life would be without him. It’s as if my life is a puzzle and he’s one of the missing pieces.”

She was looking at me wide-eyed. “You’re scaring me.”

That caught me off guard. “Why?”

“I think you depend on him far too much.”

I waved a hand in dismissal. “I don’t care.”

Jess frowned. “One word of advice: never repeat any of this to him!”

We talked a little longer, then I headed back to bed. As I slipped under the covers, I could tell immediately that Devin wasn’t sleeping.

“Hey, you,” I said, wrapping an arm around his waist and resting my head on his shoulder. He was very still. I looked up at him, realization hitting me. “Did you eavesdrop on my conversation?”

“It was girl talk. I’m always interested in what girls have to say.”

“Not always. Remember when you covered your ears in Elizabeth’s car.”

“Meh. That was different.”

I sighed. “And your conclusion?” I held my breath.

He relaxed and pulled me closer. “You’re a piece of my puzzle too.”

That was the most romantic thing I’d ever heard, and I nuzzled closer and drifted off to sleep.
